Caerfai Road, SA62 6QT St. Davids, United Kingdom
Today, Twr y Felin Hotel is famous as a luxury boutique hotel that combines hospitality with contemporary art. Around two centuries ago, however, the building originally served as a windmill processing foodstuffs for local farmers. It was constructed in 1806 by George Llewellyn and later upgraded by David Evans of Triago Farm, who bought the property in 1866. Come 1904, the tower was elevated and subsequently converted into a hotel by Evan Evans in 1907. It was here he rechristened it as Twr-y-Felin, meaning “mill tower”. It operated as a temperance hotel, but was requisitioned by the British Military during the Second World War as a wartime lookout post and WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service) station.
It finally became known as Wales’ first contemporary art hotel in 2015, after a grueling restoration and expansion. The transformation into a modern hotel required significant changes, particularly in spaces that serve as galleries. Aspects of the windmill's historic character still survive in certain parts of the property, most particularly in the Windmill Tower Suite.
While Twr y Felin Hotel's core consists of a historic windmill from 1806, the hotel embraces contemporary conventions when it comes to overall design. The exterior still retains its original tower silhouette, though of course without the iconic spinning sails. Surrounding the windmill are newer wings that were built using modern construction techniques but give homage to the original style.
Upon entering the hotel, guests will be impressed by the combination of monochrome themes and sleek minimalism. These create spaces with clean symmetry complemented by natural textures and materials. The most notable aspects, of course, are the artworks that decorate the rooms and spaces of the whole hotel. Boasting around 250 original pieces of contemporary art, this modern art hotel integrates the refined cultural experience into every aspect of your stay.
