History

The Bulkeley Hotel was built in 1832 for a very special royal visit. To make room for the hotel, around 450 older houses were cleared, reshaping the heart of Beaumaris. Sir Richard Bulkeley Williams-Bulkeley, the town’s prominent landowner, wanted a grand Georgian hotel with stunning views across the Menai Strait and the Snowdonia mountains. The design was by Joseph Hansom, the architect who also invented the famous Hansom cab, making this hotel one of his earliest major projects.

Princess Victoria, who would later become Queen, stayed here in August 1832 with her mother, the Duchess of Kent. During her ten-day visit, she enjoyed coastal walks, sailing on the Royal Yacht Emerald, steam-boat trips, and even a yacht race she won. She also attended the Royal Beaumaris Eisteddfod, presenting medals and engaging with the local community. The hotel wasn’t just a royal guesthouse; it marked the start of Beaumaris’ transformation into a fashionable seaside town.

As hospitality styles changed, the Bulkeley grew into a welcoming seaside destination while keeping its historic heart. The original Georgian architecture stayed largely intact, protecting its heritage for future generations.

Design and Architecture

The Bulkeley Hotel is a fine example of early 19th century Neo classical Georgian architecture, completed in 1832. The building reflects the Georgian preference for symmetry, clarity, and measured elegance rather than ornate decoration. Its clean lines and balanced façade create a strong yet understated presence along the waterfront.

The hotel holds Grade I listed status, recognizing both its architectural and historic importance. The interiors were planned with generous room sizes and a practical layout that allows light to move easily through the space. Tall sash windows were carefully positioned to capture wide views across the Menai Strait toward Snowdonia, connecting the building closely with its coastal setting.

Instead of relying on embellishment, the Bulkeley makes its impression through confident design and thoughtful placement. Overlooking Castle Street and the shoreline, it remains one of Beaumaris’ most recognizable landmarks. Inside, high ceilings and expansive windows continue that sense of openness, letting guests experience the same striking sea views that shaped the hotel’s original vision.
