Today, it's a charming hotel offering lovely bayside views and restful accommodations. The town is also a destination for foodies, and the on-site restaurant prepares delightful dishes made with the area's bountiful seafood. You'll find plenty of things to do during your stay; book a scenic boat cruise on the bay, visit local landmarks and galleries, or tour the countryside aboard a heritage railway.

The Harbourmaster Hotel is a fitting moniker because of its origins as the harbormaster's home and office back in 1811. Decades would pass before it opened as a public house around 1890, named the Red Lion. The pub became a fixture along the waters of Aebraeron for another century, changing its name to Harbourmaster during the 1960s while continuing to serve drinks and food to travelers and locals.
New opportunities regarding tourism arose, and by 2002, the pub reopened as a boutique hotel, run by Glyn and Menna Heulyn. The couple passed the reins to Wells and Louise Jones of the Flatrock Group in 2021, ensuring the hotel and its heritage will be cared for in the future.
The Harbourmaster Hotel occupies a scenic spot along the quay of Aberareron, though that's actually because the building was the actual harbormaster's home and office during the 19th century. Now, it is protected as a Grade II listed building, known for its striking deep blue facade looking over the docks and Cardigan Bay.
The Harbourmaster embraces the classical proportions and symmetry of Georgian architecture, its walls lined with harbor‑facing sash windows, while upper floors are accessed via a beautiful spiral staircase. The hotel itself is spread across three interconnected buildings, each featuring individually styled guestrooms. Many of these accommodations adapted the historic features, such as exposed stone and timber panelling, paired with nautical‑inspired themes.
Head Chef Shane James leads both the guests and the kitchen team on culinary adventures at The Harbourmaster’s restaurant. Indulge in fresh seafood caught right from Cardigan Bay, and Welsh produce procured from local farms. Try various dishes made with seasonal shellfish and fish, Welsh lamb, beef, Ceredigion cheeses, and organic vegetables. Savor your breakfast, lunch, or dinner while admiring the view at the restaurant. Between the meal services, you can also grab some light bites in the afternoon.
No pub establishment is complete without a bar offering a fine selection of drinks and refreshments. Try the various ales and craft beers from regional breweries, the collection of vintages available from a growing wine list, signature Welsh gin for tonics, and special signature cocktails. For a delicious non-alcoholic option, don't miss the Coaltown Ammanford Coffee made using the trusty La Marzocco coffee machine.
