Château Rhianfa is a historic home inspired by the beauty of the Loire Valley in France. Perched on the Isle of Anglesey along the Menai Strait, with sweeping views across Snowdonia, the château was built by Sir John Hay-Williams as a gift for his wife, Lady Sarah. Originally designed as a dower house on the water’s edge, its French-inspired style was influenced by the châteaux the couple admired during their travels, particularly from the era of François I. Lady Sarah personally oversaw the interiors, ensuring that every detail reflected her taste and vision.
To honor her influence and link the French design to its Welsh setting, the house was named “Rhianfa,” meaning “ladies’ abode,” a name suggested by the local vicar. Completed in 1851, it remained in the Hay-Williams family until 1957, holding its place as a cherished part of the local history. Following a period as apartments, Château Rhianfa was carefully restored and reopened in 2012 as a luxury hotel and wedding venue. Today, it stands as a beautifully preserved historic home, where French-inspired elegance meets the natural beauty of North Wales.
Château Rhianfa is a striking seaside villa, built in ornate French Gothic style and inspired by the grand châteaux of the Loire Valley. Its layout is anything but ordinary. The rear entrance sits at ground level and connects to the main block via a covered bridge, while the principal living floor is actually the second storey, giving the main rooms sweeping views of the Menai Strait. The main block rises three storeys with attics and corner turrets topped with conical roofs. The front is perfectly symmetrical, featuring a central gable, tall oriel windows, balconies, and decorative sash and mullioned windows.
A later addition, the ‘tenants hall,’ takes a simpler Tudor Gothic approach, with large mullioned windows and delicate spirelets. Inside, the principal floor is a carefully planned journey, from the bridge and entrance, you move through three main rooms arranged in a line, each richly decorated with fine woodwork, painted ceilings, and a series of ornate fireplaces. Below, labyrinthine service quarters quietly support the grand spaces above. With its dramatic architecture and elegant interiors, Château Rhianfa is a historic home full of character.
