118 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, 75200 Melaka, Malaysia
Hotel Puri Melaka used to be the ancestral home of Tan Kim Seng (1805–1864), a Straits Chinese philanthropist and successful rubber plantation owner. His family had originally come from Fujian, China, in the 18th century and became prominent in Malacca and later in Singapore.
The original house was built in 1822 and later rebuilt by his grandson, Tan Jiak Choo, in 1876. It stands on Heeren Street, which people used to call “Millionaires’ Row” because many wealthy Chinese merchants built their grand residences. When the place was turned into a hotel, a lot of care went into conserving its heritage. Parts that couldn’t be saved were rebuilt in a way that matched the original style. So now, even though you get modern amenities, it still feels very much like staying inside a Peranakan home.
Hotel Puri Melaka reflects the essence of Peranakan design, where Chinese, Western, and local influences blend into one harmonious style. The original façade and external walls have been carefully preserved, with repairs done only where necessary to match the historic specifications. When you walk in, you’ll see carved doors, open airwells, and Chinese couplets over the entrances. The old English mosaic tiles and marble floors from the 19th century have been cleaned up, so they look fresh again without losing their age. Some of the most charming details lie in what has been left untouched. The top floor still has its old ceiling finishes, and the main entrance door is the original one.
Alongside these heritage features, modern comforts have been integrated carefully. There’s a spa and wellness center within the property, and the hotel is wheelchair-friendly with facilities designed for the disabled. It’s a balance that makes the place both practical and welcoming, while still giving the feel of staying inside a true Peranakan home.
The hotel has two main spots for eating. In the mornings, most guests head to Heliconia Garden. It’s family-friendly, has a traditional feel, and the breakfast spread leans Malaysian but also covers continental and Asian dishes. It’s halal-certified, and the courtyard setting makes for a really pleasant start to the day. You can also enjoy a cup of Chinese Pu-erh tea to go with your meal, or try Kuih Cara Manis, a traditional sweet kuih that’s creamy and really satisfying.
For lunch and dinner, there’s Sekaya Garden & Galeri Café. The menu mixes Malaysian, local, and international dishes, so there’s something for every taste. It’s simple, but it really gives you a taste of the local food culture.
When you’re ready to explore, the concierge is on hand to help you plan nearby excursions and make the most of the area. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is just a five-minute walk away, and it’s a beautiful, historic temple that gives you a sense of the local culture. The Stadthuys, the old Dutch building with its striking red walls, is only about seven minutes on foot. For a mix of fun and sightseeing, you can check out Menara Taming Sari, the revolving tower that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the city.
History buffs will love the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum, which is just around the corner and gives a real insight into Peranakan life. And of course, the Malacca River Walk is perfect for a relaxed stroll, especially in the evening when the lights reflect off the water. Most of the main attractions are all within easy walking distance, so it feels like the city is just outside your doorstep.
