Kuala Lumpur is the big cultural center of Malaysia, where global influences and native heritage come together to create a rich and diverse melting pot. Near the center of this city stands The Federal Hotel, a solemn yet handsome edifice built to commemorate the country's independence. While not as tall and striking as today's skyscrapers, it is an establishment that played a silent but important role in modern Malaysia's early years. Here, visitors will indulge in a classic stay experience, complete with quality service and access to lovely amenities. Savor Kuala Lumpur's incredible cuisine, and admire amazing views of the city from your windows. Also, take advantage of its central location, close to many top landmarks and attractions.
Kuala Lumpur's Federal Hotel may not be particularly flashy or avant-garde as newer establishments in the Malaysian capital, but it forever holds a special place in the country's history. Two of Malaysia's founding fathers, Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Abdul Razak. Together with property tycoon Tan Sri Low Yat, they envisioned The Federal as the nation’s first international-class hotel. It was officially opened on the 28th of August, 1957, just three days before the declaration of independence. The hotel was purpose-built to accommodate international guests and dignitaries who arrived to witness Malaysia's independence.
At the time of its inauguration, The Federal had only 90 rooms across ten stories. Further renovation and expansions turned it into a 21-story landmark. The Federal was also a pioneer in Malaysia's hospitality industry, introducing new facilities like Malaysia’s first revolving restaurant in Bintang.
More recently, the hotel marked its 60th anniversary back in 2017. Along with these celebrations were expansions and refurbishments, including the new Merdeka Wing rooms, a transformed lobby veranda, and a new grand ballroom venue.
Due to its special purpose, the original Federal Hotel was meant to be an impressive edifice that also showed Malaysia's prosperity and potential. Architect Dato' Lee Yoon Thim designed the original form of The Federal, drawing upon his experiences studying engineering and architecture in Europe. The Federal was meant to represent a Modern Malaysia, and thus, the facade was designed with a clean, Modernist exterior, free of overly fancy embellishments.
Over the decades, The Federal expanded with new floors, increasing its spaces and rooms. Some of these additions include a revolving restaurant in 1963, which was quite novel and futuristic for its time. Major renovations took place again from 2014 to 2015, meant to coincide with the hotel's and Malaysia's 60th anniversaries in 2017. Today, the hotel features a stylish retro-modern aesthetic, blending comfort, functionality, and nods to The Federal's early years.
