Even before George Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, the denizens of the historic town were already working hard to preserve its rich history and legacy. Many ancestral homes were converted into hotels, restaurants, and even museums. Restoration work was also done to civic buildings such as the temples, mosques, and churches. Yeng Keng Hotel is perhaps one of the more standout heritage establishments in the city. The 19th-century Anglo-Indian home has had many owners over the decades, each of them adding their own mark. This made the Yeng Keng Hotel a symbol of George Town's multicultural landscape, where people from all over can come together and revel in diverse and cherished memories.
Back in the mid-1800s, George Town was already a booming colonial settlement, its growth spurred by trade between the European and Asian powers. Around this time, a local tycoon and landowner named Shaik Eusoffe bin Shaik Latiff established many properties in Penang, one of which he used as his family home. This mansion is the one we now know as Yeng Keng Hotel. His family did not stay long in the generational home, as it was eventually sold to the Cantonese Club Ying Han Pit Shu in 1897. After several decades, the club donated the mansion in 1939 to the Straits Chinese Building Association.
The current owner of Yeng Keng Hotel is Hoo Kim Properties Sdn Bhd. Under their management, the property went through a period of renovation in 2009, then opened as a heritage hotel in April 2010.
Even though it was built in the 19th century and designed as an Anglo-Indian bungalow, over the decades, the Yeng Keng Hotel has had multiple owners that had made their own additions to the property. One notable aspect is the frontage; while the mansion's facade follows a British Victorian style, its front courtyard ornate gate is that of a Chinese siheyuan.
The mansion's restoration in 2009 highlighted its heritage details. Elements such as the intricate timberwork, patterned floor tiles, and decorative plasterwork were carefully conserved or meticulously renewed.
For its interior spaces, the hotel's 20 accommodations and common spaces are fitted with period-inspired furniture that complements the preserved architecture. The overall original layout was also maintained, creating a sense of authenticity and a homey atmosphere. Even modern amenities have been discreetly integrated, preserving the immersive ambiance.
