Armenian Street Heritage Hotel is situated in George Town's Armenian Street, one of the city's most historic neighborhoods. The district gets its name from the initial wave of settlers from Armenia back in the early 1800s, though Southern Chinese migrants would make their home here. Upon the city's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, the inhabitants of George Town were inspired to contribute to their home's rich culture. In the case of Armenian Street Heritage Hotel, it provides lovely accommodations and services while also being close to the heart of the heritage zone. The hotel also gladly arranges for tours to landmarks, as well as activities like trishaw rides and Batik art classes.
Soon after George Town's recognition as the Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca UNESCO World Heritage Site, many of its locals took not only pride in their hometown, but also saw potential and opportunities. Dato' Yong Chai Seng got to work immediately, building a hotel that will stand for the values and aesthetics of George Town's historic neighborhoods. The result was Armenian Street Heritage Hotel, a 92-key hotel with beautiful heritage-style architecture reminiscent of Colonial Hong Kong.
The hotel is right next to the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) office, a government organization that manages the conservation of the city's heritage districts. While the hotel was built recently in 2013, it serves as an extension to GTWHI and hosts a scale model of the heritage area managed by the group.
Despite being built in 2013, Armenian Street Heritage Hotel embraces heritage-style aesthetics to echo the historic neighborhood it is situated in. Its exterior is reminiscent of early to mid-20th-century hotels in Hong Kong, which are also heavily influenced by British Colonial styles. The white facade carries some Art Deco and Neoclassical elements, keeping in line with its heritage-style themes.
Just as the exterior is complemented by period themes, the rooms and interior spaces of the hotel are also clad in vintage-modern decor and furnishings. In contrast to Western hotels that prefer monochrome colors, Armenian Street Heritage Hotel went for vibrant and colorful schemes, creating a much more lively and playful atmosphere conducive to enjoying George Town's heritage.
