The story of present-day L'Hôtel is largely inspired by one of the establishment's most famous guests of the late 19th century - the iconic poet and author Oscar Wilde. Inspired by Wilde's indulgent philosophy of "living above one's means", L'Hôtel was refurbished in 1967 to become an establishment that offers lavish pleasures.

History

The original L'Hôtel was founded in 1828 by Célestin-Joseph Happe, who built the hotel on the same location as the Pavilion of Love belonging to La Reine Margot (Margaret of Valois). The hotel changed its name twice, becoming the Hotel d’Allemagne in 1868 and Hotel d’Alsace after 1870.

The L'Hôtel of today has been remodeled to fit the indulgent ideals of one of its most famous guests, Oscar Wilde. The hotel's stylish lounge is named after Wilde, representing his arguably decadent lifestyle. Since its remodeling in 1967, the hotel has welcomed many other celebrities as guests. These include Frank Sinatra, Salvador Dali, and Princess Grace of Monaco.

Blending stylish and dignified Parisian architecture with opulent and passionate orientalist decor, L'Hôtel is an establishment that is proud to encourage guests looking for stays bordering on the decadent. Rooms are dressed in lush fabrics such as satin and velvet, with Art Deco aesthetics hearkening to past decades known for lavish partying.

Wilde's Lounge is of a similar atmosphere, the vintage furniture and bordello-like salon design creating a mood that invites guests to "live above their means" as Oscar Wilde did. And for lovers looking to steal a private moment, the hammam pools are designed specifically for privacy, like a small grotto for couples.

The location is perfect. We walked to almost every attraction. Quaint property. Excellent and very responsive staff.

The staff are very polite and helpful. The room we stayed in on the fourth floor was large, light filled and beautifully furnished and, by the standards of international cities, reasonably priced.
