When Prince Wilhelm of Sweden visited Eze back in 1920, he fell absolutely in love with the village's peaceful seaside and hilltop setting. He then set about acquiring individual properties in a quiet corner of the commune, each a medieval home around 400 years old. Eventually, he combined them into a compound that he used as his winter residence. Here, he penned many of his books under the name Prins Wilhelm.
Come 1953, he took leave of Eze, and the homes that comprised his residence once again returned to the locals. Two decades later, in the 1970s, the Red Cross official Andre Rochat reacquired the properties and brought Château Eza back to life. He started with a bed & breakfast and a tea room in 1982, then finally launched the hotel in 1987, which became a familiar fixture of the Azure Coast.
Design and Architecture
While Château Eza has definitely kept up with modernized comforts and amenities, the hotel maintains its classical charm and aesthetics as it's part of what makes it unique. Rooms are decorated with stylish yet classical decor, with hi-tech TVs hanging across classic paintings and burnished mirrors. Amenities are just as stylish and functional, with fancy plunge pools and jetted tubs set amidst a medieval stonework bathroom with old timbers hanging from the ceiling. To stay at Chateau Eza is to live the quiet opulence as Prince Wilhelm did, enjoying the luxury and idyllic wonders of the Azure Coast.
