Le 5 Particulier was first built in 1865 following the specifications of Gustave Gridaine, the Parisian architect known for designing the Cirque Fernando, now known as Cirque Medrano. Unlike the circus, this building served mainly as a residence for locals. Its most famous resident was Gaston Calmette, a dedicated journalist who worked as an editor of the newspaper Le Figaro. Unfortunately, Calmette's life was cut short in 1914 when he was assassinated by Henriette Caillaux, wife of Minister of Finance Joseph Caillaux.
Over the decades, modifications were added to the property. An architect known as J. Reillat built a guest house in the Norman style in 1923. The maisonettes are a more recent construction, though they were made to adhere to the hotel's overlying aesthetics.
Fast forward to 2021, the Parisian residence was renovated and opened as a luxurious boutique hotel. It boasts designer-made interiors, a flourishing landscaped garden, and a signature restaurant offering Mediterranean delights.
Design and Architecture
The name Le 5 Particulier is derived from the property's number along the street, and a reference to a hôtel particulier, a type of urban mansion with luxurious features such as a courtyard garden. The hotel strives to live up to its name by providing a lavish yet bucolic retreat in the heart of Paris.
The modern landscaped garden that is the hotel's highlight was created by master landscaper Christophe Gautrand. He set about creating a pleasant yet lush 100 square meter (1076 square feet) green space with a terrace, which is also used as the main area of the hotel's restaurant, Casetta.
For its interiors, the illuminations have been beautifully crafted by the Romanian light fixture artist Andreea Braescu. Her designs are heavily inspired by things found in nature and contribute to the biophilic ambiance of the hotel.
Another remodelling in 2023 involved the famed architecture and design firm Friedmann & Versace. Their contributions turned the hotel's interiors and accommodations into a refined experience, setting it apart from many other boutique hotels in Paris. The contemporary designs are complemented by rustic touches such as the property's original wood paneling and new additions, including Italian marble.
Anyone staying at the hotel will fall in love with its country home atmosphere that blends the best feelings of visiting France, with slight hints of Italy.
