Hôtel Plaza Athénée started welcoming guests on April 20, 1913. Most of its earliest guests were composers and theatergoers who visited Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, which is located just a two-minute walk away. In 1936, the Art-Deco-style Le Relais Plaza restaurant opened at the hotel, which attracted more guests, including designers, actors, and other celebrities.

The hotel's history is intertwined with the history of Avenue Montaigne. For instance, when Christian Dior opened his first boutique on the avenue in 1946, he would often host shoots and fashion shows at the hotel. His first collection was in fact inspired by the hotel. Hôtel Plaza Athénée acknowledged Dior's contribution to its fame by naming its spa after him.

After years of offering excellent hospitality, gourmet food, and elegant lodging, the hotel was given the distinction of Palace in 2011.
