4-Star 8.6(488 reviews)
Chemin de Saint Clair, 76790 Étretat, France

Overview

A haven for art lovers and culture enthusiasts, Le Donjon - Domaine Saint Clair welcomes guests with mesmerizing nature views, gorgeous themed rooms, and Michelin-starred cuisine. The property has existed since the 19th century, when Étretat used to be a quaint fishing village. It retains its old-world charm and offers unique elements such as rooms dedicated to famous personalities, including American dancer Isadora Duncan, and French playwright Guy de Maupassant. You'll feel like you've traveled back in time as you explore the property's well-preserved nooks. Stop by the Salon des Créateurs to admire exquisite art or feast your eyes on magnificent views of the sea and surrounding cliffs—there's a lot to discover at Le Donjon - Domaine Saint Clair.

History

Le Donjon - Domaine Saint Clair's history is intertwined with the rich heritage of Étretat. The latter was an ordinary fishing village until it was recognized as a place of extraordinary natural beauty by journalist Alphonse Karr in 1843. As the commune's popularity grew, it became a serene place to retreat to for a holiday by the sea. Le Donjon was among the many homes that cropped up in the commune during this time. It was constructed as an Anglo-Norman dungeon in 1862. Its foundation itself is historic, as it was built on Roman ruins and ancient tunnels. You can learn about its fascinating past from the Saint-Clair Télégraphe.

Initially a private property for many years, Le Donjon opened as a hotel in 1978 under the ownership of the Abodib family. It was expanded in 2002 to include an adjoining villa that dates back to the late 19th century. Some other major additions were made in 2018, 2019, and 2023. The property also became a part of Le Cèdre Solidarity, a foundation dedicated to human and environmental welfare. Le Donjon's quality services and facilities were recognized as the hotel achieved four stars and one of the restaurants earned a Michelin star in 2021.

Design and Architecture

Le Donjon's 19th-century French manor aesthetics are reflected in its gorgeous drapes and fabrics and rustic wooden furniture. It also boasts quintessentially medieval elements such as turrets. Since the dungeon and the villa were built during different periods, their architectural styles are also slightly different. The villa belongs to the Belle Époque and has a more feminine style. As for the guest rooms, they are spread across three buildings: Le Donjon, La Villa, and Le Cottage. Each room is designed to pay tribute to a famous personality, including Guy de Maupassant. The Salon des Créateurs is also worth mentioning, with a collection of artwork by independent and often obscure artists. Its most recent addition is a fresco by graffiti artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.
