Erbalunga, 20222 Erbalunga, France
The hotel we know as Castel Brando, built in 1853, is what is locally known as a Maisons d'Américains, a type of regional architecture inspired by the plantation manors of continental America during the 18th and 19th centuries. Corsicans emigrated to the New World due to the promise of better opportunities in the agricultural and mining industries. Those who struck it rich would later return to Corsica to retire and enjoy their wealth. To flaunt their success, they commissioned these houses built in a style reminiscent of their American estates.
Castel Brando's original owner was a doctor serving in Napoleon's armies, who later relinquished the estate to another Corsican who made their fortune in the Americas. This new owner soon set about beautifying the property, planting a garden of exotic plants, and furnishing the home with classic fixtures and furniture with a Corsican identity.
By the late 20th century, however, the estate had fallen into neglect and disrepair. It was in 1990 that Jöelle and Jean Paul Pieri bought the property and set about restoring it. The couple owns the seaside hotel Les Mouettes in the town of Ajaccio, over on the western side of Corsica. Castel Brando became a sister hotel to Les Mouettes, while still having a distinct identity of its own.
Design and Architecture
As a restored maisons d'Américains, the estate of Castel Brando evokes a bygone era when the nouveau riche of Corsica flaunted their newly found wealth and power. The exterior architecture features a symmetrical stone facade painted in bright tropical colors and surrounded by gardens of exotic flora. Also in the garden courtyard are stonework walls built using traditional methods, which add to the rustic and idyllic ambiance.
Indoors, the spaces are decorated with vivid wallpaper that contrasts with the classical vaulted ceilings and terracotta flooring. Artworks and antiques line the halls and rooms, providing a glimpse into the lifestyles of Corsicans in the past.
Les Américains
Les Américains, the signature restaurant of Castel Brand, promises a dining experience that revolves around being simple and delicious. Working together with local producers of Cap Corse, the restaurant prepares and provides a menu of Corsican cuisine, made with fresh ingredients. Complementing these rich flavors is a selection of regionally produced vintages available through their wine list.
Breakfast
Prepared every morning, both in the dining hall and courtyard patio, guests can start their day with a hearty buffet of Corsican delicacies and organic items. Aside from familiar favorites such as hot chocolate, honey, and dairy products, the buffet also offers a selection of local hams, cheeses, and coppa meat.
