Rue Du Centre, 78770 Villiers-le-Mahieu, France
The Château de Villiers-le-Mahieu has a long and layered history dating back to the 13th century. It was originally constructed as a medieval fortress by the Maizelan family. However, one of the lords of Maizelan was sent to England as a hostage in 1360, ensuring the surrender of Count de Montfort under the terms of the Treaty of Brétigny.
Over the next centuries, the estate was passed through different owners and noble families. During the 17th century, Claude de Bullion took possession of the estate. His son, the Marquis d'Atilly, transformed it into a more refined residence in 1642, adding Renaissance-style architectural elements. Under the Marquis stewardship and rebuilding efforts, the estate eventually gained the status of a château.
With its history, Château de Villiers-le-Mahieu was recognized as a Monument Historique by the French Ministry of Culture in 1964.
Fast forward to 1965, and Count Charles de Rohan-Chabot brought new life to the chateau by restoring and revitalizing its historic features, emphasizing its 17th century grandeur and turning it into a unique castle accommodation. Between 1971 and 1979, French Expressionist painter Bernard Buffet resided in the chateau, adding an artistic legacy to its history. In 1980, Jean-Luc Chaufour transformed the chateau into a luxury hotel, retaining its historic charm while adapting it to modern hospitality standards.
Today, Château de Villiers-le-Mahieu is part of the Les Maisons de Campagne brand, making it a sister property to Maison du Val in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
Château De Villiers-Le-Mahieu is a sprawling estate encompassing different buildings: the castle, a farmhouse with 43 rooms, the spa and wellness center, a barn with 9 rooms, a cottage with 5 rooms, a sports shed, and sports courts.
Remnants of its past as a medieval fortification still exists with the square layout surrounded by a wide moat, rounded corner towers, and a gatehouse flanked by twin cylindrical turrets. Despite going through multiple renovations, these features have been preserved, giving the estate a distinctive and historical atmosphere.
What also makes Château De Villiers-Le-Mahieu a remarkable stay is that no two rooms are alike. From exposed wooden beams, antique furnishings, and large windows, the rooms combine historic charm with modern comfort. Baby cots and changing tables also make it a child-friendly and family-friendly historic stay.
