History

Information about Chateau de Varenne's past is unfortunately sparse, but one can't deny that its gorgeous architecture and idyllic countryside location are worth preserving. What is known, however, is that the estate was built during the 17th century and originally known as Chateau de Sauveterre. Its name changed when it was acquired by the Varenne family sometime in the early 20th century.

The hotel is now owned by Paul and Emma Radford, an Irish couple who, together with their children, open the chateau's doors to travelers every year from May until October. Under their hospitality, you'll be staying in posh rooms remodelled with period themes, and revelling in an idyllic resort-like estate.

Design and Architecture

As a country estate built in the 17th century, Chateau de Varenne has gracefully withstood the test of time and boasts many classic features that remain intact. Stone is a very stalwart material, with erosion and fading left as the marks of years gone by. The sturdy walls and central staircase bear such weathering, yet remain strikingly beautiful. After the manor fell into neglect, the Radfords gave it much care after acquiring it. They restored many aspects of the old home, such as vaulted arches and marble fireplaces. In some places, they even reinstalled tomette tiles, which are a type of traditional terracotta flooring found in Provence. Outside, the 400-hundred-year-old Lebanese Cedar tree guards the property, and is said to be a protector of the chateau and village.

For its interiors, the Radfords set about decorating rooms and other interior spaces to match the opulence of the past. Tapestries and paintings hang from the walls, while antique furniture and fixtures complement the period themes of each area.

Visit the wine communes around Avignon by signing up for the Avignon Wine Tour, a partner tour service of the chateau. Avignon is itself a major hotspot for culture and history. Known as the City of Popes for a time, it boasts palaces and cathedrals built during the Avignon Papacy, back in the Middle Ages.

You can also make your own itinerary and visit the neighboring towns such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Tavel, and Lirac. Each has its own specialty, from vintage labels produced by wine farms and wine chateaux, to lavender farms producing quality perfumes and oils. There are also ancient sites worth checking out, such as Pont du Gard, known to be the tallest Roman aqueduct and built sometime in the first century.
