Overview

Château de Saint Paterne is a property full of contrasting charms. Its humble exterior features stable and reliable stonework architecture that weathered the centuries. Conversely, its interiors live up to the opulence of French aristocrats. It was built in the 15th century and known as the residence of King Henry's mistress. Today, the estate is the residence of the Valbray family, who operates the chateau as a stately bed & breakfast recognized by the Michelin Guide. Guests can relax with the spa and pool facilities, or use the estate for fitness and wellness. There are also numerous cultural sites and activities, such as the Château des Ducs of Alençon and private tour flights around the countryside, respectively.

History

Château de Saint Paterne has been around for over 500 years, making it a well-known landmark in the commune of Saint-Paterne. Built sometime in the 15th century, the estate immediately gained a reputation when it became the residence of King Henry IV's mistress, Diane de Courtemanche. It's worth noting that the very same room where King Henry IV and Diane conducted their romantic encounters is among the chambers available for lodging, aptly named the Henri IV Room.

The next milestone in the chateau's history took place in the 18th century when it was given a touch-up as well as an expansion. After that, the estate would remain quiet and untouched until it was purchased by its current owners in 1989. Charles-Henry and Ségolène de Valbray made the estate their own, where they raised their three sons. Together, the family has been diligent in maintaining the historic beauty of the manor and its parklands, while providing exceptional service as an opulent bed & breakfast.

Design and Architecture

The Valbrays have kept the original regal charm of Château de Saint Paterne mainly intact, opting to improve on the decor instead of tearing anything down. They would liven up the chateau's general areas by using soft lighting and candles, creating a classical sense of opulence that immerses guests in the splendor. Modern period-style furnishings blend in with actual antiques, while precious portraits, paintings, and ceramics decorate the walls and halls.

The guest suites at Château de Saint Paterne are individually themed, representing a historical aspect of the estate. The most famous is arguably the Henri IV Room, where the king's mistress once lived. The architecture and interior design of the rooms don't necessarily adhere to a unified period, as each also focuses on functionality and practicality. Like the rest of the estate, the owners charmingly combined contemporary aesthetics with classical conventions, creating a stay experience that is comfortable yet still reminds guests of its rich heritage.

Events and experiences

Cultural Experiences and Outdoor Experiences

Château de Saint Paterne promises a wide array of fun and relaxing activities you shouldn't miss out on during your stay. If you're the type to keep fit and active, go biking or trail walking around the 2.5-acre (4047-sqm) estate. There are also sports courts where you can practice your badminton and table tennis skills. Children can also enjoy playing on the trampoline or hanging out in the tree house. The chateau also has a partner yoga instructor if you'd like to take a class for 100 EUR (112 USD). Those who would prefer to unwind and take it easy can take a dip in the outdoor pool or detox in the wood sauna. Rejuvenating therapies are also available at the on-site spa.

Though the château offers plenty to enjoy, the enchanting French countryside beckons just beyond its gates. The owners can help you book excursions, including off-road SUV drives, as well as horseback rides. You can also book a private tour flight and admire the Sarthe department from a bird's-eye perspective.

The city of Alençon is filled with historic buildings and landmarks you should check out. The Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Alençon is an impressive Gothic church built upon the ruins of an older Romanesque church from the 12th century. On the other hand, the Château of the Dukes of Alençon is the remnants of a grand fortified estate from where the region's dukes ruled and lived. Most of the castle was already torn down in the 16th century, under the orders of King Henry IV, but the remaining walls and towers are still impressive to behold.

Instead, you can reach out to the owners and see if you can work out a plan for an intimate birthday or anniversary luncheon or dinner. They might even be able to refer local performers to provide dinner entertainment for your special affair.

For larger group bookings at Château de Saint Paterne, you can reserve a section of the property and make appropriate party arrangements. The owners emphasize the lack of venue packages, instead offering a fully bespoke service to suit your gathering. They will be able to adapt to whatever event you have in mind, such as brunches, cocktail parties, or even barbecues. Up to 70 guests can be accommodated for dinners, making the chateau a fine recommendation should you want to also hold a company trip here.

Customer Reviews

Location

The location was lovely, the staff were lovely and the grounds were lovely too.

Amenities

The chateau was incredibly charming. More beautiful and elegant than I was expecting.

Price

The booking.com price was confusing in that while we booked a room with a double bed and a bunk bed on the site, there was a surcharge on arrival for the bunk bed of 30 euros. This was very unclear while booking and needs to be clarified on booking.com. That said, even with the surcharge, the price for the room we had, was very reasonable.

Dining

Dinner was outstanding, the staff were also really helpful and friendly!
