Overview

Listed as a historical monument since 1948, Chateau De Rochecotte has a storied past any history buff would love to discover. It played a major role in the Hundred Years' War and housed many prestigious figures over the years. Today, the magnificent chateau hotel will captivate you with its lush gardens, Italian terrace, and gourmet cuisine. During your stay, you can stroll through the grounds, take a tour of the Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil vineyards, and enjoy soothing health treatments. You'll also have plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun such as hiking and horse-riding. The property is wheelchair-accessible, ensuring every guest feels comfortable. It also allows your fur babies to stay with you.

History

The illustrious history of Chateau De Rochecotte goes back to the Late Middle Ages, during the period of the Hundred Years' War. It used to play an important military role, watching out for the English troops. It took on a residential role in 1767 when the Guillon de Rochecotte family acquired it. Years later, in 1828, Duchess Dorothée de Dino purchased the property. She took on the responsibility of refurbishing the castle and adding elegant Italian touches to it. The architecture you see today is mostly a result of the Duchess' imagination. Her uncle, Prince Charles Maurice de Talleyrand Périgord, also had a significant role to play in the chateau's history. He was a trusted confidant and advisor to the Duchess. The latter married Count Edmond de Talleyrand Périgord on his advice and had three children.

The Duchess always kept the chateau's door open for distinguished guests, which included French novelist and playwright Honoré Balzac and politician Adolph Tiers. Eventually, she moved to another home and later gifted the chateau to her daughter, Pauline. Pauline stayed there until her death, after which the property belonged to her son, Antoine, and later, his children. In 1934, Cuban interior designer Emilio Terry Sanchez received the chateau as a gift and decided to reimagine its design and architecture. During Emilio's time, the property also played a role in the Treaty of Versailles.

After Emilio's death, the chateau was uninhabited for a long time. In 1978, Marcel Joly & Compagnie bought the property and cleared all the belongings of the Duchess. There was another gap of several years when it remained empty and closed until the Pasquier family bought it in 1984. Under this family, the property got back its former glory and was transformed into a gorgeous hotel.

Design and Architecture

Chateau De Rochecotte's architecture is reminiscent of typical French chateaus from the 18th/19th centuries. It boasts an elegant cream facade with intricately carved pillars. Two pavilions provide the ideal vantage points for taking in the surrounding scenery. It also features Neo-classical and Baroque styles that were introduced by Emilio Terry Sanchez. He would refer to it as the Louis XVII style. Other than that, the property is filled with antique decor and showcases classy vintage furniture.
