Long before Chateau de Rhodes was established, the land belonged to Isabelle, Countess of Foix, back in 1402. The Chateau de Rhodes we know today was established in 1797 as the estate of Jean-Louis de Narbonne. Narbonne was an influential figure, known to have served the French army during the reign of Louis XVI and distinguished himself in the Napoleonic Wars. After his death, the estate languished before being restored and expanded in 1861. While not much information is known during these years, the estate seemed to have fared well enough and survived the following centuries.
David Sindell acquired the property sometime in the 21st century, converting it into a vacation estate by restoring its heritage features and adding new facilities. The chateau has since become a popular bed & breakfast, country resort, and events venue in this part of Occitania.
Design and Architecture
Chateau de Rhodes has the quintessential features of a French estate: a sturdy country manor for its main building, and expansive parklands with wooded areas where residents and guests can enjoy nature. While it was built in the final years of the 18th century, the chateau adhered to the provincial styles of many other estates that were far from the cities. Hints of its classical elements can still be found everywhere in the building, most noticeably in the old fireplaces and stonework walls. Some areas have also retained the timber pillars and beams, such as in the indoor gym.
For its suites, Chateau de Rhodes rooms are fitted with posh Persian rugs and carpets, along with pieces of furniture dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Together, they create a lavish atmosphere that guests will find elegant yet comfortable.
