Château De La Grillere's estate was built back in 1825, featuring the quintessential country manor aesthetic of solid stonework and impressive towers. It was constructed by the Chenot family, though much of their story was lost to time. The chateau eventually became the summer home of Hélène Elise Marie de Beauvoir, the beloved aunt of the 20th-century philosopher and feminist Simone de Beauvoir. Simone herself spent several summers of her life at Château De La Grillere, her long walks inspiring her writings and reflections. Her close companion, philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, is also believed to have visited during their courtship, adding another brushstroke to the estate’s intellectual legacy.
In 2022, the chateau entered a new chapter when it was acquired by a British couple, Tim and Sharon, who dreamed of retiring in a castle of their own. They took on the gargantuan task of renovating the chateau by themselves, calling in professionals and experts only for aspects that needed a truly finer touch. Tim’s three decades as a heating and plumbing engineer proved invaluable, while Sharon embraced the challenge with resourcefulness and determination, learning new techniques through video tutorials. Their ongoing efforts have breathed new life into the chateau, transforming it into a noble residence once again, one room and stone at a time.
Design and Architecture
While Tim and Sharon continue to renovate and expand the chateau, they already have rooms and amenities set up for potential guests. The estate is ideal for those seeking refined seclusion, offering a unique blend of rustic charm and quiet luxury—an enchanting base from which to explore the French countryside. The exterior architecture of the chateau is atypical of the standard symmetrical style, but it is also this aspect that gives it its personality.
Currently, guests can choose from five themed room types, each named after a royal title and adorned with period-style furnishings, curated art pieces, and color palettes that reflect their regal inspiration. Aside from the bedrooms, the chateau's inner spaces strike a balance between classical and contemporary designs. The living room, for example, has antique furniture such as the desk and mantel, yet also a very modern vibe because of the lounge sofas. On the other hand, the kitchen has a fully modern look that focuses on functionality.

Château De La Grillere offers an unforgettable venue, available for exclusive use so you can celebrate with your closest friends and family in a setting that feels truly your own. Tim and Sharon can assist in making necessary arrangements. They can get in touch with planners, decorators, and caterers, which also lets you support local industries. Cultural and Outdoor Experiences
Château De La Grillere lies nestled in a secluded corner of Saint-Germain-les-Belles, so you'll have to drive to a city like Limoges if you're looking for cultural centers and museums. If you are planning to visit the city, be sure to check out the Musée de la Résistance, which is dedicated to the French Resistance during the Second World War. There's also the Musée du Four des Casseaux, a museum about the region's porcelain industry.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the surrounding region boasts picturesque landscapes perfect for hiking, sightseeing, or leisurely drives. Mont Gargan has gentle slopes accessible by vehicle and features a scenic peak topped with the historic ruins of a medieval chapel. Castle Bonneval is a medieval fortified castle open for tours and stays. However, what makes it extra notable is that it is still the residence of the same noble family that has lived there since feudal times.
Other Celebrations
Whether you're planning an intimate celebration or a grand gathering, Château De La Grillere is available for private events. Though they've only owned Château De La Grillere since 2022, Tim and Sharon have been part of the community and may be able to recommend and refer local establishments such as florists and bakeries.
