The story of Chateau de Candie goes as far back as the 14th century, with references to a fortified estate belonging to the Chaffaron family, who would later become the noble family Candie. They were considered prominent as they were on close terms with the Savoie family to hunt together, and were regular participants at tournaments. However, their fortunes took a turn, and the estate was sold, passing hands several times before being bought by an Italian merchant named Jean André Sarde. The Sardre family lived here for over a century, adding and expanding facilities to the estate.
However, their last family head, Henry François Joseph Sarde, did not have any heirs and donated the estate to charity. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, Chateau de Candie was owned by the Tredicini family, who used the chateau as their family home.
Didier Lhostis, an antique collector and leatherworker, purchased and restored the estate in 1990. Once he was satisfied with the state of the property, he opened the estate as a hotel in 1994. Lhostis also opened the Chateau des Allues, another historic property in Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny. It was also during Lhostis's ownership that the estate was relocated to the vineyards, successfully moving the facilities and crops to another section of the estate in 2003.
The current owners of Chateau de Candie acquired the estate in 2016. The businessmen Richard Green and Roger Borne are also the owners of Madame Vacances, a hotelier brand specializing in a wide variety of traditional lodgings. Under their management, they set about transforming the chateau into a stunning fixture of Chambery, where both locals and travelers can stay, dine, relax, and even party.
Design and Architecture
Chateau de Candie isn't just a well-preserved castle estate, it has also become a magnificent hotel that embraces its heritage without compromising on comfort and aesthetics. Each of its rooms has an individual style and theme, integrating old features such as pillars and timbers with the modern design. The room decor is sophisticated and tasteful, making use of vintage and antique furniture and accouterments, along with tasteful art and lighting.
The owners of the hotel have been diligent in maintaining not just the heritage but also the overall aesthetics. The foremost example is the hotel's signature restaurant, La Cantine, and its recent makeover. The dining hall is now dressed in period furniture and colors, hearkening to the days when the aristocracy feasted and supped at the castle.

Candie 1891
Also served at Chateau de Candie is their signature vintage, Candie 1891. The estate has had a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 14th century. Unfortunately, an infestation of phylloxera in 1879 would destroy the vineyards. It wouldn't be until over a century later, in 2003, that the chateau once again grew grapes and pressed new wines. The chefs of Chateau de Candie masterfully integrate the white wine in many of the restaurant's dishes, as well as ensuring that the menu's flavors harmonize with the wine.
Turn your destination wedding into an unforgettable fairytale event by holding it at Chateau de Candie. Your celebrations will be held at a place surrounded by gorgeous mountains and forests, and served with exceptional French cuisine. Hold your photoshoots around the castle's scenic spots, making extra-special memories with your loved ones. The chefs of the hotel hold masterclass culinary lessons, imparting their expertise in making beloved French dishes and desserts. They also have wine tasting workshops, teaching aspiring sommeliers and enthusiasts how to appreciate vintages and develop a better sense of taste and smell.
Chambery is a city rich in heritage, having witnessed many political and military upheavals over the centuries. Yet it is also home to many cultural accomplishments, found all around its territory, though mostly concentrated in its central historic area. The Chateau of the Dukes of Savoy was the administrative and residential building of the Savoie Ducal family. At the height of their power, their duchy ruled parts of modern France, Switzerland, and Italy.
Close to the Ducal Chateau are the Savoy Museum and the Saint-François-de-Sales Cathedral. The museum features exhibits and galleries of the region's treasures, including artifacts from the Roman Era, as well as treasured artworks of the noble families that lived in Chambery. The Saint-François-de-Sales Cathedral is an ancient Gothic cathedral, famed for its intricate and very well-preserved stonework and colorful stained glass windows.
Other Celebrations
For small private affairs, you may contact the management and see if they can arrange a booking at the restaurant with a bit of personalized service. But if your birthday or anniversary requires a larger space, the chateau has venues you can privatize, with a choice of indoor or outdoor spaces.
