Overview

Since 1841, Hotel DeBrett has held its place on Shortland Street, evolving from a frontier-era pub into one of Auckland’s most distinctive boutique stays. The current building, built in 1925, retains elements of its earlier structure while introducing a more refined style. At the center, a glass-roofed atrium draws in natural light, connecting the rooms and shared spaces, while the interiors bring together bold textures, artwork, and heritage details, giving each corner its own character. Dining here stands out, with well-designed spaces that feel full of personality, complemented by seasonal, shareable dishes, local wines, and carefully crafted cocktails. Step outside, and you’re immediately in the middle of Auckland’s city life, with cafés, galleries, and the waterfront all within easy reach.

History

Hotel DeBrett has watched over Shortland Street for almost two centuries, quietly witnessing Auckland grow and change around it. The story begins in 1841, when Thomas Henderson built the original Commercial Hotel, trading from 1843 and quickly becoming a local gathering spot. After a fire in 1858, it rose again as a three-storey brick hotel, holding its place as one of the city’s beloved corner pubs.

The 1920s brought big changes. In 1925, architects Wade and Bartley transformed the building into the elegant Stripped Classical-style hotel we see today. Parts of the old brick walls were kept, reinforced, and lifted to three storeys, while shops and a cellar were added. Upstairs, bedrooms, sitting rooms, and staff quarters maintained the hotel’s dual role as lodging and social hub.

In the 1950s, Dominion Breweries modernised the hotel, introducing sit-down drinking and private bathrooms in every room—a big step away from Auckland’s old six-o’clock swill. The garden bar, lounge, and dining areas became social destinations, and the hotel was renamed Hotel DeBrett in 1959. Through refurbishments in the 1980s and a transformation into a boutique hotel in 2007, it has kept its heritage alive while welcoming a new generation of guests.

Design and Architecture

Hotel DeBrett carries a layered architectural identity that reflects different periods of Auckland’s growth. The present structure, shaped during the 1925 redevelopment, with subtle Art Deco influences, designed by architects Wade and Bartley. Elements like stone panels at the High Street entrance and the strong corner positioning reinforce its presence within the surrounding streetscape.

Inside, the building shifts into a more expressive and layered space. The interiors blend restored heritage features with contemporary design. A central glass-roofed atrium brings in natural light and acts as the heart of the hotel, connecting different levels and spaces.

Art Deco details appear in places like the wood-panelled Housebar and mosaic accents, while mid-century furniture, bold textiles, and curated New Zealand artwork add personality throughout the rooms. Copper chandeliers, raw brick walls, and eclectic furnishings create a space that feels both historic and lived-in. Overall, the design is less about uniformity and more about layers, where each space reveals a slightly different character while still staying connected to the building’s past.

Housebar

Tucked away on Level 1, Housebar offers a more intimate side of Hotel DeBrett’s dining and social scene. Walking in, it feels like stepping into another era, where the mood is softer, the lighting warmer, and the pace a little slower. The space draws on mid-century furnishings and Art Deco touches. The cocktail menu leans into that history, with classically inspired drinks prepared with care and attention. It’s the kind of place where you can sit back, take your time, and enjoy a well-made drink.

Opening hours: 12 pm until late

CornerBar

At Cornerbar, the focus naturally turns to what’s on the table and in your glass. Evenings often begin with a quick drink but tend to stretch a little longer, especially once you start exploring the rotating tap beers. The selection highlights some of New Zealand’s well-known craft breweries, giving you a chance to try different styles.

Alongside the beer, the wine list leans strongly local, with a good mix available by the glass or bottle. It’s easy to pair a drink with something simple to eat. There’s a casual, after-work energy here, but it’s the variety and quality of the drinks, along with shareable food, that keep people coming back.

Opening hours: 12 pm – 9:30 pm (Monday & Tuesday); 12 pm – 10:30 pm (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday)

Destination Wedding

At Hotel DeBrett, weddings feel personal and close-knit rather than grand. The spaces here are designed for smaller celebrations, with capacity typically up to 50 guests. Whether it’s an engagement gathering, a quiet ceremony, or an intimate reception, everything stays focused on your closest circle. With the option to host both the ceremony and reception in one place, the day flows easily, leaving more time to relax and celebrate.

The Drawing Room is at the heart of it all, offering a simple, light-filled setting that can be shaped to suit different styles. Floor-to-ceiling shelves, wooden floors, and neutral tones create a blank canvas, while its connection to the hotel’s atrium adds a sense of character. It comfortably holds smaller ceremonies, making it well-suited for couples looking for something understated yet meaningful.

Receptions follow the same intimate approach, with seated dining for smaller groups or cocktail-style gatherings with canapés. Throughout the planning process, the hotel’s events team works closely with you, helping coordinate details and ensuring everything comes together smoothly on the day. With its central location and on-site accommodation, it offers a convenient and thoughtful setting for a relaxed city wedding.
