History

Set in the heart of Dunedin, the building that now houses Fable Dunedin Hotel dates back to 1862, when it first opened as Wains Hotel during the Otago Gold Rush. Recognized as Dunedin’s oldest hotel, it was founded by merchant Job Wain and quickly became a prominent hub for travelers and traders during the city’s rapid expansion.

As the city grew, the hotel evolved alongside it. In 1878, a more elaborate structure was developed, showcasing a striking Victorian Italianate style that reflected the prosperity of the era. The property remained a central social and commercial landmark well into the early 20th century.

In the years that followed, the building went through changing phases, including periods of decline, before undergoing a major refurbishment in the late 2010s. Carefully restored, it was reintroduced as Fable Dunedin, blending preserved heritage features with a more contemporary boutique identity. Today, the hotel continues to reflect its layered past, offering a stay closely tied to Dunedin’s architectural and cultural evolution.

Design and Architecture

The design of Fable Dunedin reflects a careful balance between its 19th-century origins and a more contemporary boutique style. Housed within a restored Victorian-era building, the structure stands out for its Italianate architecture, with an ornate façade featuring columns, carved figures, and detailed stonework that highlight the craftsmanship of the period.

Inside, many of the original elements have been retained, including decorative ceilings, grand staircases, and timber detailing, which continue to shape the character of the space. These historic features are paired with updated interiors that introduce modern lighting, custom carpets, and curated artwork, creating a layered look that feels both classic and current.

The restoration focused on preserving as much of the original structure as possible while adapting it for present-day use. As a result, the hotel’s interiors combine heritage detailing with contemporary finishes, offering a design that reflects Dunedin’s architectural past while still feeling relevant for today’s travelers.
