Overview

Udaan Dekeling Resort was built back in 1850, when Darjeeling was still growing as a British colonial outpost with a burgeoning tea industry. Darjeeling itself was meant to be a sanatorium and resort for British folk working in India, and it is that part of history that Udaan Dekeling Resort has fully embraced. The colonial architecture and period interior decor create an atmosphere that hearkens back to simpler times. At Grains, the signature restaurant of Udaan Hotels, guests can savor West Bengal's delightful vegetarian cuisine. Various adventures await travelers outside the hotel, as the Himalayas are filled with lush forests and scenic slopes that are home to tea farms, nature parks, and a historic UNESCO World Heritage Railway.

History

The establishment of Udaan Dekeling Resort in 1850 coincides with the British East India's plan to turn Darjeeling into an outpost and a major producer of tea. Tea plantations had only gotten their start in the previous few years, after Dr. Archibald Campbell successfully grew Chinese tea plants in Darjeeling's mountain environment. Around the same time, they also envisioned Darjeeling as a sanatorium and resort where the British in India could recuperate.

Design and Architecture

To step into Udaan Dekeling Resort is to step back in time. The Udaan brand has been particularly careful in preserving the heritage aspects of the resort, particularly its Colonial Era architecture and period atmosphere. The guest suites of the resort blend modern conveniences while retaining the aesthetic charm of Victorian and Edwardian England. Other areas of the resort still embrace contemporary conventions, such as the glass-roofed terrace.
