When Kaushik Majitha and his brothers, Rajendra and Tejas, sought to expand their business in another direction, they decided to give something back to their city. They purchased one of the rundown old houses in Ahmedabad's historic pols, a 100-year-old townhouse, and transformed it into an authentic heritage stay. The restoration work was done by Rajiv Patel and his THREEE Foundation, who has also been the ones to restore French Haveli in the same area.
As a traditional Gujarati home, Baghban Haveli features many traditional designs the region is known for. The most striking would be the intricate wood carvings on the pillars, windows, and doorways. Complementing it are floral filigrees carved in stone. Stained glass decor and marble tiles that provide luxurious accents to the home. Adding to the heritage touches are the native furniture, which includes an indoor jhula swing.
Baghban Haveli operates as a bed & breakfast, so look forward to a tasty continental breakfast every morning. You can dine in the comfort of your room or while enjoying the view from the rooftop terrace. The staff also takes requests for lunch, dinner, and snacks.
Surrounding Baghban Haveli are the streets and alleys of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Historic City of Ahmedabad. Here, you can find local shops and eateries, as well as shrines and other places of worship. This old city center also holds many heritage landmarks, such as Rani no Hajiro, where the city's founder, Ahmad Shah I, entombed his queens. Close to the tombs is the Jama Masjid, the oldest and largest mosque in the city, also constructed by Ahmad Shah I.
Ahmedabad is also famed for its festivities, such as the yearly Navratri Festival. This colorful nine-day festival takes place every October and honors the goddess Shakti and her aspects Durga, Lakshmi, and Sarasvati.
