The Taj Mahal Tower, Mumbai

Chain Hotels 1951-Present
5-Star 9.2(5401 reviews)
Apollo Bunder, 400001 Mumbai, India

Overview

The Taj Mahal Tower is an iconic structure sitting by the Arabian Sea, offering beautiful ocean and city skyline views. Architects Rustam Patell and Melton Bekker designed it in 1973 as one of the stunning properties under the Taj Hotels group.

The hotel is a majestic product of South Indian, Rajasthani, and Tanjore influences. It offers close and easy access to the magnificent Taj Mahal Palace hotel adjacent to it, including the latter's facilities such as nine restaurants and the J Wellness Circle Spa. Like the other Taj properties, this one too offers elegant accommodations that speak of traditional Indian grandeur and modern luxuries, and memorable experiences that makes travelers reminisce fondly of India.

History

The Taj Mahal Tower was built in 1973 as an extension of its magnificent neighbor, The Taj Mahal Palace, so it's necessary to talk about the latter's origin first.

The Taj Mahal Palace was envisioned by Jamsetji Tata, founder of the Tata Group. He wanted to build something iconic in Mumbai that would cater to people of all races, Indian or European. He commissioned skilled architects and excellent equipment to create what is today's luxurious haven, welcoming affluent people from around the world. In December 1903, The Taj Mahal Palace welcomed its first guests.

Around 70 years later, Rustam Patell and Melton Bekker brought The Taj Mahal Tower to life. The tower proudly showcases South Indian influences, as well as R ajasthani-style details. In 2010 , the Rockwell Group stepped in to renovate both the palace and tower wings and redesign some of the on-site restaurants, making the properties even more alluring.

Design and Architecture

Architects Rustam Patell and Melton Bekker built The Taj Mahal Tower, deriving from multiple architectural influences. You can see architectural elements of South India in its pillars, reminiscent of the temples of Tanjore. and Rajasthani influences in the arches and jharokhas. Its straight, tall structure is also akin to modern-day skyscrapers. The hotel also offers glimpses of Moorish and Renaissance styles of architecture.

As for the rooms and suites, each boasts tasteful, elegant decor with traditional elements and modern amenities.
