First property in India to join Wyndham’s Trademark Collection
Grand Winner of the Best Heritage Super Luxury Property Award at the 2023 India Travel Awards
Amritsar is a city steeped in the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Sikhs, an ethnoreligious people who follow the teachings of Guru Nanak. It is also a melting pot, where various faiths coexist, and exchanges of ideas are encouraged. The Earth Amritsar, formerly the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, is one such result of these cultural exchanges. Built in 1890 to celebrate Queen Victoria's long reign, its architecture has since been restored, and buildings converted into a heritage stay. Sleep in old wards that have been transformed into luxury suites, and dine on Punjab cuisine made with produce grown from the organic gardens. With its central location, the hotel also provides easy access to the city's many wondrous heritage landmarks.

The hotel we now call The Earth Amritsar was originally built in 1890 as the Victoria Jubilee Hospital. It remained a medical institution after India's independence, though renamed as the Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and subsequently attached to the Government Medical College of Amritsar. Vivek Shah acquired the property sometime in the 2010s, and established Earth Suites & Resorts Private Limited, with plans to expand with other heritage stays around India. Later in 2024, the famed Wyndham Hotels welcomed the property into its signature Trademark Collection, making it the first among its renowned portfolio that is based in India.
The core aesthetics of The Earth Amritsar are based on its well-preserved Punjabi architecture, featuring arched windows, tall ceilings, and tiled floors. Complementing these traditional features are earthy color themes, creating a homey yet luxurious atmosphere.
Contrasting its classical exteriors are the posh vintage-modern interior designs. Stylish furniture is found in the spaces and accommodations, often complemented by period-style art and decor. The design also takes advantage of the high ceilings, using clerestory windows to bring in natural light. Aside from the fancy decor, select rooms and suites also feature patios or balconies with garden or city views.
Accessibility features were also added during the hotel's renovation into a heritage stay. The Earth Amritsar offers designated accessible rooms and suites. These are equipped with wheelchair-friendly bathrooms that have raised toilets with grab rails, as well as visual aids like Braille and tactile signs for guests with vision impairments.
The Earth Amritsar is proud to represent the flavors of Punjab, offering a diverse cuisine shaped by the region's rich history as a melting pot. The food is also made using ingredients grown at the hotel's organic garden, or sourced from local producers and markets.
All-day dining is available at The Lutyens, the hotel's signature poolside restaurant. On the menu are Punjab and Mughlai cuisine, as well as Asian and Italian options. The Whisky Lounge, on the other hand, is a cozy bar lounge where one can grab a drink after a day exploring the city. The hotel also holds a special Alfresco by the Pool dining service, treating guests to a refreshing outdoor ambiance enjoyed with delicious gourmet dishes.
Amritsar is a city full of cultural and historic treasures, making it also a wonderful backdrop for destination weddings. The Earth Amritsar has two lavish banquet halls on offer, as well as outdoor areas that can be set up for the ceremonies. The Savoy Hall is a stylish indoor space with a capacity of 250 guests, and adorned with ritzy Art Deco patterns and impressive chandeliers. Much larger is Eden & Elysium, a grand banquet hall that can host a wide variety of functions and accommodates up to 700 guests.
As a heritage property, The Earth Amritsar is very much in touch with the spiritual and cultural heartbeat of the city. The management can arrange enriching experiences without needing to leave the hotel grounds, such as evening entertainment provided by folk musicians and performers. Guests interested in learning new recipes can arrange for cooking classes, taught by professional chefs. The concierge can also arrange for guided tours or help acquire tickets to local attractions and events.
Because of the hotel's central location, many historic hotspots are easily accessible from the hotel. The Sri Harmandir Sahib is the most sacred location to the Sikh faith, featuring a shining temple of white marble covered in gold leaf, sitting atop a gigantic sacred pool of water. Also nearby is the Summer Palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, known by its name Ram Bagh. Aside from the palace itself, the expansive gardens and green spaces surrounding it have been opened as a public park.
Apart from lavish weddings, The Earth Amritsar will also be happy to host corporate events at its venues. These can be prepared for indoor and outdoor activities, conferences, and seminars. But for guests who are looking for an intimate celebration, they may instead approach the management and arrange a private table at the restaurant or in the garden.
