Taj West End, Bengaluru, founded in 1887 by the Bronsons, is one of the city’s most iconic heritage hotels. Acquired by the Taj Group in 1984 on a 99-year lease, the property was carefully restored to preserve its character. Spread across acres of gardens, the hotel radiates colonial architecture. Over the years, it has hosted world leaders like Angela Merkel and Theresa May, and major Hollywood icons, and is one of the oldest continuously running hotels in India. Dining is a distinctive experience with globally inspired and regional cuisines. Guests can indulge in the J Wellness Circle spa, offering ancient Indian rituals. The hotel was awarded the National Tourism Award 2017 for Best Luxury Hotel in the 5-Star Deluxe Category.
Founded in 1887 by the Bronsons as a modest 10-room inn, Taj West End, Bengaluru has grown into one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. In 1905, the Spencers acquired the property for Rs. 4,000 (USD 45), expanded it with 20 additional rooms, and named it “The West End.” When the Taj Group leased it for 99 years in 1984, the contract ensured the historic name would be preserved. Nestled within acres of historic gardens, the property is home to centuries-old cycads.
The Taj West End is one of the oldest continuously running hotels in India, with timeless elegance woven into every corner, from its lush lawns and renowned event spaces to housing the oldest functioning postbox in the city, crowned in honour of Queen Victoria’s coronation.
At Taj West End, Bengaluru, the Heritage Wing, built in 1905, is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in the city. With its tiled roofs, white pillars, and long verandahs, it instantly takes you back a hundred years. The building has been carefully restored, keeping its old character while adding modern luxuries that make it feel warm and welcoming. Outside, there’s even a restored horse carriage made in Wimbledon, London, a reminder of how people once travelled around Bangalore. The lounge is almost like a little museum, with hand-drawn maps of colonial India, Persian zodiac charts, and the original rosewood bar stand from the Bronsons’ inn. Step outside and you’ll spot cycads, trees that date back to the dinosaur age.
Walk down the Heritage Corridor and you’ll see old sepia photos from the past. If you look closely, you might even spot Winston Churchill in one. The lawns outside are home to Bengaluru’s second-oldest rain tree, planted in 1848, its wide branches forming a beautiful green canopy. The colonial buildings take up only a small part of the property, leaving plenty of space for tropical gardens and lotus ponds. Each block of rooms is named after an Indian flower, Frangipani, Gardenia, and more. Beyond the gardens, the hotel offers a swimming pool tucked into the greenery. The property is also wheelchair-accessible, with toilets fitted with grab rails, so every guest can enjoy with ease.
