Recognized in the Michelin Guide and awarded three Michelin Keys
Magical and enchanting are two words that could fittingly describe this floating palace hotel out on Lake Pichola in Udaipur. Originally named Jag Niwas, the heritage property now known as Taj Lake Palace opened its doors in 1963 under the care of Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar. Luxury and history come together to create a peaceful paradise surrounded by the serenity of the lake and the majesty of Udaipur’s beloved heritage sites. Travelers are treated as esteemed royal guests, with the classic architecture and posh antique decor making them feel like they’ve traveled back in time. Awarded three Michelin Keys, this is definitely one of those dream holidays you might not want to return to reality from.
The Taj Lake Palace creates a fascinating sight sitting atop Lake Pichola’s waters. That was perhaps the intended vision of Maharana Jagat Singh II when he had the floating palace constructed back in 1743. Originally named Jag Niwas, the palace was used as a summer retreat for the royal family.
Fast-forward over 200 years, and his descendant Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar restored and converted the palace in 1963, turning it into a unique luxury hotel that embraces its rich Rajasthani heritage. Guests can embrace its old-world appeal with classical Mewari architecture and wall decor while delighting in modern comforts, creating a little slice of paradise for themselves.
Guests can soak up plenty of history by admiring the traditional Mewari architecture of Taj Lake Palace. The classic jharokha arches and domes are consistent with Udaipur’s prevalent architectural styles. The hotel’s rooms and halls are decorated with priceless artworks and fineries made of silk and velvet, creating an opulent atmosphere fitting for a royal palace.
Despite its location on an island, Taj Lake Palace ensures the hotel is able to address the accessibility needs of its guests. They have dedicated wheelchair-friendly rooms with raised toilets with grab rails and lowered sinks. They also have measures to help vision-impaired guests, such as tactile and braille signage, and auditory guidance features.
