History

The origins of the Fateh Prakash Palace are attributed to be around the time of the early 20th century , and are mainly borne out of the efforts and ideas of the local Rajput nobles. Like many of Udaipur’s wondrous heritage sites, the palace was the project of Maharana Fateh Singh, who wished to build a stately residence not just for his family but also for lodging esteemed royal guests. With the sights of Pichola Lake and the Aravalli Hills, and its proximity to other areas under family ownership, it was an easy decision for the Maharana to set up a new palace along its shores.

Many of the palace’s grounds are still used as they were originally intended, even as if they were gradually adapted over time for an expanding and modernizing population. Durbar Hall Sabhagaar was an expansion built by the Maharana in the 1910s, now decorated with portraits and armaments of the Maharanas of the Mewar dynasty. Another grand hall is Durbar Hall Satkar, similarly filled with royal artwork and dressed in Victorian furnishings. Despite its early years coinciding with the outbreak of both World Wars, the independence of India, its transition into a republic, and the loss of ruling status for the Maharanas, the property would remain undamaged and intact, with the expansion of its clientele to its current form arising around this time.

Design and Architecture

Due to its significance to Udaipur’s royal family and history, the Taj Fateh Prakash Palace counts itself among the city’s best-maintained heritage properties. The Rajputani architectural designs and aesthetics have been meticulously preserved, while also bringing in more modern amenities, such as air conditioning, televisions, and free WiFi.  The traditional influences can be seen in features such as the jharokha arched windows, elaborately arched doorways, and domed pavilions, many of which are preferred viewing portals facing Lake Pichola.

The furnishings and furniture were largely drawn from the royal toshakhana storerooms, meaning that each piece displayed and used in the hotel is mainly royal. The venues, too, display grandeur befitting an esteemed royal lineage, with furniture and surfaces including various geometric and naturalistic patterns that indicate Indo-Saracenic influences. Durbar Hall Sabhagaar was built during the time of Maharana Fateh Singh and is decorated with artifacts and portraits of Maharanas of the Mewar dynasty. It also boasts a magnificent 1,000 kg (2,204.62 lb) crystal chandelier that beautifully illuminates the whole hall.

Along with the hotel's modernization came the addition of accessibility features for mobility-impaired guests. These include wheelchair-friendly bathrooms with grab rails and lowered sinks.
