Samode Haveli's story begins with the Thakurs of Samode, particularly the Kachhwaha Rajputs who held the prosperous town of Samode as part of their domain. The need for a royal residence naturally followed, and the haveli's construction began around 1799.
During the time of the British rule in India, the town was bequeathed to the Nathawat clan, who from then on became recognized as the Rawal Saheb or Maha Rawal. The Rawals opened Samode Haveli's doors to the public as a heritage hotel in 1988. They have also kept the haveli as one of their three royal residences, the other two being Samode Bagh and Samode Palace. These are located at their home domain of Samod and are also operated as heritage hotels.
Despite the haveli's age, its architecture, artworks, and furniture are well-maintained. Though the architecture is mainly Rajputana-style, the Indo-Saracen influences are still very apparent from its inlaid doors and arched doorways. Local craftsmen and artists are involved with maintaining and restoring the haveli and its items, from its intricate filigrees and murals to its masonry and woodwork. These masters are likely also called upon to preserve the hotel's many antique furniture, such as the teak wood cabinets and trunks.
The courtyards provide a stone oasis where travelers can wind down with a refreshing drink and a delicious meal. The open space exudes a spectacular vibe during sundown, with the cool, darkening shades of the sky contrasting with the illuminations of the hotel. Surrounding the courtyard are rooms and corridors with large windows and portals, filling the interiors with natural light and ventilation. The indoor lounges, in particular, benefit from this traditional concept, as guests can relax and unwind while enjoying a cool breeze from the courtyard.
The hosts of Samode Haveli decorate their guestrooms with energetic colors and patterns, creating a vibrant atmosphere that remains conducive to rest. Portraits and photographs of historical moments and members of the family decorate the walls, proudly presenting the accomplishments of their forebears. The antique furniture, which includes four-poster beds, desks, and Elizabethan bathtubs, provides a sense of familiarity and legacy. The hotel's first-rate lodgings, the Sheesh Mahal Suites, boast intricate frescoes and mirror work, establishing luxurious suites fit for royalty.
