Standing proud, Pal Haveli tells Jodhpur’s centuries-old royal story. Built in 1847 by the Thakur of Pal, it has been home to the noble family for over 150 years. Out of the 700 havelis once built in Jodhpur, Pal Haveli is the only living haveli, still inhabited and preserved by the family. In 1887, American artist Edwin Lord Weeks sketched it for Harper’s Magazine, introducing it to Western audiences. After India’s independence, Thakur Umaid Karan Ji’s descendants carefully undertook a two-year restoration. It reopened in 2005 with original wooden ceilings, carved windows, antique lamps, and intricate interiors preserved. Set under Mehrangarh Fort, the restored grandeur blends heritage with modern luxury, making Pal Haveli a living museum of Jodhpur’s royal lineage.
Pal Haveli, located right in front of the iconic Clock Tower on the main street of Jodhpur, was built in 1847 by the Thakur of Pal. The noble family has lived in this stately mansion for more than 150 years, with the mighty Mehrangarh Fort standing tall in the backdrop. The haveli has caught the attention of travelers for generations. In 1887, the American artist Edwin Lord Weeks even sketched the residence for Harper’s Magazine, which brought Pal Haveli to the notice of Western audiences.
After India gained independence, when royal patronage was fading and many thikanas had to sell or abandon their homes, the Thakurs of Pal chose to hold on to their ancestral residence. Out of the 700 havelis once built in Jodhpur, Pal Haveli remains the only one that is still alive and preserved.
The family held on to their heirlooms, things like vintage utensils, old arms, paintings, and artifacts that had been part of the house for seventeen generations. It was the noble family of Thakur Umaid Karan Ji’s descendants who took on the work of bringing the haveli back to life. The restoration was done with a lot of care, still keeps its old soul with wooden ceilings, carved windows, and antique lamps. In 2005, after two years of restoration, it opened to guests, giving them a chance to experience Jodhpur’s living heritage.
Pal Haveli is a true piece of Jodhpur’s heritage, where history, grandeur, and hospitality all come together. Walking through the huge arched doors, guests step into a quiet courtyard shaded by a hundred-year-old Neem tree. With 21 rooms and suites, the haveli still holds the family’s legacy.
Every room tells its own story. The Royal Heritage Rooms have that old-world charm with carved teakwood furniture, rare paintings, and décor that’s been carefully restored. Heritage Rooms show off antique furniture, vegetable-dyed artwork, and artifacts from past generations. The Historical Suites are full of Rajput architecture, painted pillars, stained-glass windows, old weapons, and cultural pieces. Nothing has been extensively refurbished, and the elements are kept the same way the family used them decades ago.
The Zenana Courtyard, meant for the women of the family, shows off feminine elegance with artistic shringaar corners, a prayer hall, vintage cradles, idols, and a multi-facade chowk with a fountain. This place used to host festivals, bhajans, religious ceremonies, pre-wedding rites, and music performances.
The Central Lounge Museum keeps the family’s heritage alive with antiques. From courtyards and terraces, you can see views of Jodhpur’s iconic landmarks. Modern comforts are here, but the old charm stays, with the family personally making sure every guest feels the true essence of a living haveli.
