Manuscript-Jhilwara Haveli was built in 1910 to serve as the royal residence of the Jhilwara family. The Jhilwaras belonged to the Solanki Rajput clan of Udaipur, with the first Thakur being Kunwar Shanker Singh Solanki. One of the latter's descendants, Thakur Ram Singh Solanki, was a multitalented individual who envisioned and oversaw the construction of Jhilwara Haveli.
While it started off as a royal residence, the haveli transformed itself to fit many roles, such as that of a school and even a poultry farm! Currently, it serves as a luxurious abode for travelers in Udaipur, featuring well-preserved remnants of the past as well as immaculate modern amenities and services.
Design and Architecture
Designed by Taro Studio, Manuscript-Jhilwara Haveli stands out with its understated European-style decor, quite unlike the colorful and flamboyant Rajasthani style. However, the boutique property does retain several touches from the past, including jaali or latticework, intricate hand-carved pillars, glittering chandeliers, and beautiful archways.
Aside from that, it's mostly a neutral color palette, with splashes of the color rust here and there, evokes a sense of elegance. The hotel is equipped with elevators for reaching the various floors, but the entrance and reception are still under-equipped with accessibility fixtures. The hotel was also built on a hill's slope and is thus designed with sets of stairs to be climbed to gain entrance, which may be a challenge for those with mobility issues.
