The Maidens Hotel is a timeless landmark of New Delhi and is a testament to the city’s transformation in the early 20th century. The hotel was constructed for the 1903 Delhi Durbar, providing accommodations for dignitaries and other esteemed guests, including the man who would design New Delhi, Edwin Lutyens. Embracing its part in New Delhi's history, the hotel encourages guests to experience the city through its heritage walks around Mughal-era and British Colonial Era landmarks. On-site dining offers three distinctive restaurants, each serving authentic flavors: from recipes popular during the British Colonial Era to Indian classics. With its blend of history and hospitality, Maidens Hotel ensures a memorable stay at the heart of India's capital.
The Maidens Hotel was originally known as the Metropolitan Hotel, and remains one of New Delhi's tangible links to the Delhi Durbar of 1903. The grand ceremony commemorated the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as the Emperor and Empress of India, with dignitaries and representatives from around the world arriving for the occasion. For its stately quality and level of service, the Metropolitan immediately became the hotel of choice for many of these important guests.
Through the next decades, many other VIPs would make the hotel their home. Of particular note is the architect Edwin Lutyens, who was tasked with designing what would become India's modern capital, New Delhi. The hotel also became the setting of several movies, including the British drama The Wind Cannot Read, and the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
In 1934, the property was acquired by Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, who founded the Oberoi Group. Under Oberoi's management, the Maidens Hotel embraced its old-world charm and aesthetics, remaining a link to Delhi's past. This dedication eventually won the Maidens official recognition as a heritage hotel in 1994.
The Maidens Hotel is a proud example of British Colonial architecture, particularly that of the Victorian Era. Its facade features fine stonework that depicts carefully crafted symmetry, embellished with arches, pilasters, and columns. During the 1903 Delhi Durbar, the hotel's exterior bore a rich red color, which was quite fashionable at the time. It is now washed in sleek white, creating a timeless Neoclassical ambiance that will be treasured for years to come.
Complementing the hotel's dignified exteriors are posh yet highly practical interior designs. Guest rooms and suites eschew the overly ornate furniture designs, opting for period-style pieces that are sleek and functional. The walls and floors are similarly decorated, covered in soft carpets and adorned with photographs and art, but not enough to smother the airy atmosphere with clutter.
Also provided are designated accessible rooms for guests with mobility impairments. These come equipped with wheelchair-friendly bathrooms with amenities like lowered sinks and raised toilets.
