Although Laxmi Vilas Palace was built in 1887 as the residence of Raja Raghunath Singhji, the story goes far deeper and is tied to the glory of the Jat people.
The city of Bharatpur was founded in 1733 by Maharaja Suraj Mal, and became one of the three cities from which they ruled the Mewat region, the other two being Deeg and Dholpur. The land was formerly known as Fatehpur and the domain of Khem Karan, a rival Jat king. Through both military strength and cunning, Suraj Mal defeated his rival and renamed the city Bharatpur, naming it after Bharata, the younger brother of Lord Rama.
Long after the end of British colonial rule and the unification of India, the descendants of Raja Raghunath Singhji continue to live in the palace, using it as their royal residence. Not only do they maintain and manage the palace hotel, they also lead events and ceremonies such as pujas and rituals for festivals like Diwali.
Design and Architecture
Even though the palace was built during the time of British Indian rule, its architecture remained true to Rajput and Mughal conventions. It mainly features the cloud-like arched windows and portals, as well as jharokhas, a regional type of projecting windows or balconies. On its roof are domed parapets from which guests can admire the cityscape of Bharatpur.
Inside, the common halls and spaces are decorated with photographs and paintings of the royal family and their exploits. The white walls also serve as a canvas for colorful and intricate filigree patterns.
