Overview

Laxmi Vilas Palace was constructed in 1887 to be the residence of the Maharaja's brother, designed in the traditional Rajasthani style with Indo-Saracenic touches. Now converted into a heritage hotel, travelers and guests can learn about the fierce and noble Jat people who ruled this part of Rajasthan. Each room is bright and airy, decorated with traditional furniture but also equipped with modern amenities. Foodies are in for a treat as they can enjoy Rajasthani cuisine, particularly Jat delicacies, at the grand banquet hall. Outside the palace, there will be plenty of adventures to find, such as exploring the nearby Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visiting the former Jat capital of Deeg.

History

Although Laxmi Vilas Palace was built in 1887 as the residence of Raja Raghunath Singhji, the story goes far deeper and is tied to the glory of the Jat people.

The city of Bharatpur was founded in 1733 by Maharaja Suraj Mal, and became one of the three cities from which they ruled the Mewat region, the other two being Deeg and Dholpur. The land was formerly known as Fatehpur and the domain of Khem Karan, a rival Jat king. Through both military strength and cunning, Suraj Mal defeated his rival and renamed the city Bharatpur, naming it after Bharata, the younger brother of Lord Rama.

Long after the end of British colonial rule and the unification of India, the descendants of Raja Raghunath Singhji continue to live in the palace, using it as their royal residence. Not only do they maintain and manage the palace hotel, they also lead events and ceremonies such as pujas and rituals for festivals like Diwali.

Design and Architecture

Even though the palace was built during the time of British Indian rule, its architecture remained true to Rajput and Mughal conventions. It mainly features the cloud-like arched windows and portals, as well as jharokhas, a regional type of projecting windows or balconies. On its roof are domed parapets from which guests can admire the cityscape of Bharatpur.

Inside, the common halls and spaces are decorated with photographs and paintings of the royal family and their exploits. The white walls also serve as a canvas for colorful and intricate filigree patterns.

Events and Experiences

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences

Laxmi Vilas Palace also presents itself to be more than just a wonderful heritage stay. Guests are able to immerse themselves in Rajasthani culture without leaving the property by partaking in authentic thali dinners, watching and listening to local performers, and learning more about Bharatpur's royal family. But the hosts would also love if their guests explored what's outside the hotel.

Foremost is Keoladeo National Park, a former royal hunting reserve and now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its rich biodiversity. Bharatpur is also home to Lohagarh Fort, a massive defensive citadel built by Maharaja Suraj Mal during the 18th century. Other major projects of the royal family were Deeg Fort and the Deeg Palace.

Other Celebrations

Laxmi Vilas Palace can also host company trips, providing not only well-equipped meeting and seminar halls, but also opportunities for memorable celebrations and lively gatherings. For smaller groups or guests who prefer a far more intimate setting, you can get in touch with the management and work out a plan for personalized services, especially if it's for a birthday or anniversary.
