Maharaja Krishnaraj Wadiyar Bahadur IV, ruler of Mysore, built Lalitha Mahal between 1921 and 1931, with the intent of providing an official royal residence for the Governor-General and Viceroy of India. Though the era of the British Raj has ended, Lalitha Mahal retained its splendor and grandeur, opening its doors to guests from all over the world. Its architecture blends Indo-Saracen and European aesthetics, creating a striking and eye-catching edifice. Sleep in cozy and stylish suites, and dine in a royal banquet hall where the Maharajas met with fellow distinguished personalities. Experience a holiday as a noble when you visit Mysore and stay at Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel.
In the early 20th century, Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar Bahadur IV of Mysore commissioned the construction of a royal palace to serve as a residence for his most esteemed guests. The project began in 1921 and was completed in 1931, just in time for the arrival of India's new Viceroy, Freeman Freeman-Thomas, the Marquess of Willingdon.
As for the name Lalitha Palace, scholars believe it came from Lalithadri, the monicker natives gave the eastern portion of the Chamundi Hills
Edwin Wolleston Fritchley, the lead architect of Lalitha Mahal, took inspiration from iconic Renaissance and Neo-Classical buildings in Europe when he designed the palace. Most apparent was St. Paul's Cathedral in London, with its white facade and impressive two-story dome. He also envisioned a regal edifice like Italian palazzos, lined with columns and surrounded by sprawling gardens.
Visitors will be enchanted by the classical European elements upon stepping inside Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel. Marvel at the lovely rosewood furniture and colorful carpets that line the walls and floors. The balustrade staircase made of Venetian marble recalls the grandeur of the Italian Renaissance. The halls and spaces are decorated with life-sized portraits of the royal family, as well as commemorations of their past battles - including against British forces. Other embellishments include Baroque ceilings in the banquet halls, and decorative stained glass additions to doors and windows.
