The history of the Kaladwas Lal Haveli dates back to the 19th century, when it was built by the Chawra family of Varsoda, who were appointed by the Maharanas as the administrators of Kaladwas village. Over the next centuries, the property was able to survive unharmed and unchanged both World Wars, the independence of India, its transition to a republic, and the loss that meant for the noble status of the Chawra family and their Maharana lords. The ownership of the property remains in the hands of the Chawra family to this day, with the property having gradually been turned from a heritage haveli into a publicly available hotel.
The classic Rajasthani architectural features of the Kaladwas Lal Haveli are immediately apparent due to its bright red sandstone exterior adorned with intricate naturalistic design patterns and jharokha windows. Interior-wise, these features are rather more muted, with internal surfaces giving way to earthy tones and wooden furnishings that utilize plain coloring or specific areas where patterning is used.
The original features from centuries ago have been carefully preserved even after renovations, with reinforcements and enhancements for guests’ safety and comfort, such as air conditioning, televisions, and internet service. Local artisans and craftsmen helped restore the haveli and transform it into a heritage boutique hotel using eco-friendly techniques, including an 18-month-long plastering process known as “ghutai”.
Authentic Rajasthani flavors and international cuisine , set amidst scenic views, await guests at Kaladwas Rooftop Restaurant. Specific dish types may vary depending on staff choice and ingredient availability. Among the dishes that guests can expect are homemade beef meatballs, crispy spicy fried quail, creamy garlic mushroom, and roasted baby potatoes with rosemary. For those with special dietary needs, the restaurant can accommodate guests as well, with special arrangements to be made with management during inquiries and reservations.
The property hosts cultural performances that will let you learn more about regional art forms. You can also meet local artisans or opt for personalized tours with knowledgeable guides and listen to stories of the bygone era. The hotel organizes music and storytelling evenings as well.
