The hotel now known as Heritage Madurai started out as the Madurai Club, an expansive leisure space for the employees of Madurai Mills. The property was designed by esteemed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the father and main proponent of Tropical Modernism architecture.
While Heritage Madurai is a much younger property compared to the centuries-old temples of the city, it is a window offering glimpses of the culture and philosophies of post-colonial India. The club reopened as the Heritage Madurai in 2008, offering a slew of wonderful new amenities and restored facilities. The new generation of architects and designers who restored and are maintaining the property ensure that the hotel is faithful to Bawa's style and philosophy.
According to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), buildings of architectural, historical, archaeological, and aesthetic importance are recognized as historic properties. Though far younger than the ancient palaces and temples of the city, Heritage Madurai earns its spot for being a part of Madurai's 20th century history.
Commissioned in 1971 as a leisure club and venue for the employees of Madurai Mills, it was fittingly named Madurai Club. The company commissioned Geoffrey Bawa, a famous Sri Lankan architect, who designed numerous public and private buildings in both Sri Lanka and India. Blending Western aesthetics with consideration for India and Sri Lanka's climate, Bawa developed his signature Tropical Modernism style and applied it to the club's architectural design.
Although Madurai Club eventually fell into disuse, it was given a new life in 2008 as the hotel Heritage Madurai. Its restoration was led by the architect Vinod Jayasinghe, who was Bawa's apprentice. Apart from staying faithful to Bawa's aesthetics, Jayasinghe also added his personal touches to the property with courtyards, plunge pools, and even a swimming pool inspired by reservoirs at Indian temples.
Design and Architecture
While Heritage Madurai is an outstanding example of Tropical Modernism architecture, it may need some explaining what sort of philosophies went into this style and design, and why it is significant.
Simply put, Tropical Modernism is not just focused on appearance but also functionality in tropical climates. The design of the building should integrate with the environment, especially when it comes to vegetation and topography. Refreshing open spaces, the use of local materials, and natural ventilation are also hallmarks of this architectural style.
