Hebbars Heritage Home, a century-old landmark in South Mumbai, began as the Modern Hindu Hotel before being rebranded by the Hebbar family. It still embodies its original spirit, offering comfort and a home-like feel. Beyond its rich history, its unbeatable location in the city’s cultural and commercial heart is a major draw. Guests are surrounded by iconic cafés, Irani bakeries, and authentic regional eateries. A game room and cozy terraces provide spots to unwind, while the neighborhood puts visitors steps away from Mumbai’s highlights, from the Gateway of India and Marine Drive to Colaba Causeway’s vibrant street shopping, historic landmarks, lively markets, and the bustling waterfront, putting the city’s best experiences right at your doorstep.
Hebbars Heritage Home started out as the Modern Hindu Hotel, but about a decade ago, the family decided to make it more personal and rebranded it with their own name. Founded in 1924 and taken over by Shankar Narayan Hebbar in 1926, it was later passed to his son Anantha Krishna. Today, the third generation, Ajit Hebbar, continues the legacy.
Situated in the Fort area of South Mumbai, the home sits amid colonial-era architecture, heritage streets, and bustling markets. South Mumbai has long been the city’s cultural and commercial heart. For South Indians who came here a century ago searching for work, it would feel alien. The language, the food, and even the clothing were unfamiliar. Hebbar’s Heritage Home was started to offer them a sense of belonging and a place to eat familiar meals, speak their language, and connect with people like them.
The hotel also used to have an in-house South Indian eatery serving simple, homely, and cost-effective tiffin. It was loved by everyone, from mill workers, taxi drivers, visiting families, and even politicos from nearby Mantralaya and the Bombay High Court.
Hebbars Heritage Home exudes Victorian-era charm, subtly blended with Art Deco and Portuguese touches. The colonial structure has largely stayed untouched, letting its history shine. Heavy wooden doors with iron locks, beautifully tiled floors, stained glass windows, and teal-painted walls under high ceilings give it a timeless feel.
It’s a place that doesn’t need to prove itself; it simply is. For anyone wanting an authentic, character-filled experience of Old Bombay, this is it. The property also offers a lovely terrace to soak in the city’s lively atmosphere, along with thoughtful accessibility features including a lift, disabled-friendly access, and toilets with grab rails, ensuring comfort and convenience for all guests.
