While many havelis in Jaipur were built from the ground up as manors for the nobility, Haveli Kalwara began its life as a Rajput courthouse delivering justice to the people. It wasn't until Jai Singhji moved into the property that the courthouse became a mansion residence. Its next transformation wouldn't be until the dawn of the 21st century, when the Kalwara family would open the haveli's doors to the world as a heritage hotel. Where once courtiers and nobles would hold gatherings, meetings, and celebrations - the visitors of the current era come from all over to partake in festivities such as Holi and Diwali.
While details are somewhat sparse, it is well-known that the building now recognized as Haveli Kalwara was once a courthouse during the 17th century. It would not become a haveli until the early years of the 19th century, when a noble named Jai Singhji converted it into a colonial manor. It would take another two centuries before Haveli Kalwara would transform yet again, this time into a heritage hotel. It was during the first few years of the 21st century when the Kalwara family opened the mansion to the public. Haveli Kalwara hosted many visiting nobles and courtiers under the British colonial rule and beyond, but the haveli hotel of today warmly welcomes guests hailing from all walks of life, and from nations all over the world.
Design and Architecture
Perhaps because of its origins as a city courthouse, the rooms of Haveli Kalwara give an atmosphere of humility and warmth. These are contrasted by the eye-catching traditional decor, which includes colorful painted wall filigree, stylish jarokha arch windows, and vibrant carpets and accouterments. Every one of the haveli's rooms has been given a unique color theme that makes them stand out from each other. These themes are then complemented by charming antique furniture pieces that are also reminders of generations past.
