Right in the middle of the busy streets of Old Delhi, Haveli Dharampura feels like stepping back in time, with every nook reflecting royal heritage. Haveli Dharampura, built in 1887, has witnessed generations of Delhi’s royal families and their historic legacy. After decades of neglect, Vijay Goel and Siddhant Goel led a six-year restoration, preserving original features and craftsmanship, earning the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The haveli showcases 19th-century Mughal-inspired architecture with intricate woodwork, carved stone facades, jharokas, and traditional flooring. The haveli has once hosted Mahatma Gandhi, adding to its historical significance. Together, both havelis offer cultural activities, classical music, authentic Mughlai and Old Delhi–inspired cuisine, giving guests an immersive, memorable heritage experience.
Haveli Dharampura, built in 1887 AD, is a 19th-century haveli tucked into the busy lanes of Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. Back then, Old Delhi was called Shahjahanabad and was the city’s cultural heart, and havelis like this symbolized wealth and style. It was home to well-known families and once rang with the sounds of daily life, celebrations, and gatherings.
Over the years, as the city changed, Haveli Dharampura fell into neglect. Families moved out, maintenance was ignored, and by the late 20th century, its charm was almost gone. Declared unsafe by the Municipal Corporation, it was close to collapse.
That’s when Vijay Goel and Siddhant Goel stepped in, determined to save it. When they began, the building hardly looked like a Haveli anymore. After six long years of hard work with about 50 craftsmen, it was carefully brought back to life. Traditional restoration methods were used, damaged stones were replaced carefully, old furniture was kept, and archival records were maintained to document every stage.
Golden Haveli, originally built in 1906, is a sister property and a smaller, newer addition with 12 rooms, created to complement the larger Haveli Dharampura. Interestingly, it once hosted Mahatma Gandhi as a guest, adding to its historic charm. Together, these two havelis reflect the Goel family’s dedication to preserving the heritage of Old Delhi. Today, both properties shine once again, reminding us of their historic beauty and proving that even long-neglected havelis can be brought back to life.
Haveli Dharampura and Golden Haveli are beautiful examples of 19th and early 20th-century Mughal-inspired architecture, carefully restored to keep the spirit of Old Delhi alive. Haveli Dharampura has 14 boutique-style rooms, including Shahjahan Suites, Diwan-e-Khas rooms, and Jharoka Rooms.
Its design shows off intricate woodwork on the rooftops, carved stone and steel sculptures, antique balconies, jharokas (windows) looking out over Chandni Chowk, floral motifs, multi-foliated arches, carved sandstone facades, and traditional wooden joists and lime concrete floorings. From elephant motifs on the large arched doors to the use of lakhori bricks, every detail has been carefully brought back to life. The Haveli was restored from near dereliction and even won UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation, a testament to the dedication and care behind the work.
Golden Haveli adds to this experience with 12 suites and a slightly more modern feel. Around its central courtyard, ornate galleries lead to cozy rooms like the Jahan Ara Rooms, luxurious Mumtaz Mahal Suites, and the historically inspired Gandhi Suite. While keeping its traditional look, Golden Haveli brings in contemporary comforts and themed interiors. Both havelis now shows how timeless architecture and modern living can come together beautifully.
