Gogunda Palace has stood in the Aravalli hills since the 16th century, surrounded by thick forest. Built as a fortress, it later became the capital of Mewar under Maharana Pratap Singh, who defended his kingdom against the mighty Emperor Akbar. The palace witnessed turning points in history, Akbar’s siege in 1567, Maharana's coronation in 1572, and the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. Over time, much of it began to fade, but restoration started in 2001, and it opened as a heritage hotel in 2013. Today, history continues to live in style at Gogunda Palace, featuring well-appointed rooms, world-class dining, and experiences like heritage walks, village tours, and outdoor safaris.
Dating back to the 16th century, Gogunda Palace is surrounded by dense forests and atop the Aravalli hills. The palace originally served as a fortress before later becoming the capital of Mewar during the reign of the greatest Hindu Rajput, Maharana Pratap Singh. He showed immense bravery in defending his kingdom against Mughal Emperor Akbar, and the palace witnessed numerous attacks and historic events. Some of these events include Akbar's Attack in 1567 and Maharana Pratap's coronation in 1572, as well as the preparations for the Battle of Haldighati in 1576.
In the 21st century, careful restoration brought the palace back to life, preserving its centuries-old architecture. Work began in 2001, and by 2013, the Gogunda Palace opened as a heritage hotel. Later in 2014, the property was purchased by sisters Payal Gandhi Kothari and Meghal Gandhi Pandya from a Mumbai-based family passionate about arts, culture, and heritage. Their father, Jyotin Gandhi, had spent years restoring heritage properties and was captivated by Maharana Pratap’s childhood home. He decided to acquire and elevate it into a luxurious heritage retreat.
The Gogunda Palace is a clear example of Mewari architecture, with features that make it different from other parts of Rajasthan. The grand chhatri in the Raj Tilak wing catches the eye, while the Hathipol entrance, wide enough for elephants, reminds one of the royal era. The old stepwell, or baoli, has now been turned into a swimming pool. As you move through the restored palace, heavy doors open to jharokhas, small windows, turrets, and hidden tunnels.
With the support of local craftspersons and artisans, the team uncovered murals across ceilings, archways, windows, and niches, covering nearly every surface. The marble inlay floors show fine patterns, and stained-glass windows fill the rooms with color. Despite its age, the palace feels alive. Modern interiors, carefully curated comforts, a royal spa, and a fully equipped fitness centre make every stay both historic and luxurious. This mix of old and new continues in the 40 suites and rooms, some of which include private jacuzzis. Each is decorated with art and designs from Mewar’s tradition. The most special is the Raj Tilak Suite, where Maharana Pratap was crowned. With hand-painted murals featuring mythological characters such as Krishna and his gopis, carved wood and stone, and the original coronation bed with its detailed headboard, it is a room that truly carries the weight of history.
