India's 18th century was a time rife with political upheavals and clashing kingdoms. It was during this era that a commander named Pilaji Jadhavrao made a name for himself through his military prowess and brilliance. As it was his duty to defend the region, he built a fortress-residence carved from solid rock, from where he could administer and protect the Marathis. Today, Fort JadhavGADH is a premier heritage stay, known not only for its intact 300-year-old architecture, but also for the rich experiences offered. Sleep in lavish tents and suites, and dine on wondrous Marathi cuisine. The surrounding hills and villages offer plenty of adventures, and the city of Pune is also close by for urban outings.
Fort JadhavGADH's story begins in 1707, when the Marathi commander Pilaji Jadhavrao was tasked by Chhatrapati Shahuji to establish a military presence in the Saswad region, south of Pune. Using the sturdy bedrock of the surrounding hills, Jadhavrao constructed a fortress in 1710, which would serve as a bastion and residence. The fort remained in significant use after Jadhavrao's passing, often serving as a site for council gatherings or as a command center for military campaigns. But eventually, it fell into neglect in the 20th century, following modernization and the abolishment of royal titles.
In 2007, the Kamat Group acquired the estate from Jadhavrao's descendants and immediately set about restoring the fort to its original splendor. Instead of weapons and new fortifications, the fort gradually transformed into a heritage stay, with old facilities converted or expanded into accommodations. Courtyards and muster fields that were used for drills and formations are now dining spaces and event venues. The fort's stables have also been transformed into the Aai Museum, where artifacts and treasures from Jadhavrao's time are on display, offering glimpses into life in 17th- and 18th-century Pune.
Although it was also the residence of Jadhavrao and his family, the estate was primarily a Marathi defensive military structure. Instead of fanciful adornments like carvings or filigrees, the exterior architecture expresses an aura of sternness and practicality. The thick fortress walls are said to have been carved from the hill's bedrock, held together by stone masonry. Ramparts, bastions, and the heavy, spiked darwaza gates that turned away besieging troops remain intact or have been restored, continuing with their silent vigil over the region.
The common spaces served a variety of purposes, such as locations for training, drills, or mustering. Others have more practical functions, such as the kund, or pond, which collects rainwater.
Contrasting the rigid exterior are lavish aesthetics for interior spaces such as halls and accommodations. Centuries-old treasures can be found around the hotel; some decorate the niches and alcoves, while others are the fixtures or furniture themselves, such as the antique carved doors and beds of the suites. Other old features integrated into the overall design are the wooden pillars and pilasters, as well as exposed beams, creating a rustic ambiance.

Fort JadhavGADH provides a one-of-a-kind setting for your destination wedding. Celebrate atop a 300-year-old fortress with sweeping views of the Sahyadri Mountains (Western Ghats). The fort has two venues available; Prangan, meaning courtyard, is an open alfresco space with a capacity for 60 reception guests. The Rooftop venue, on the other hand, is larger and can accommodate a reception of 100 guests.
Aside from the ceremony itself, the fort also welcomes a variety of functions, such as pre-wedding shoots, sangeets, and receptions. Contact the management via email or mobile number so you can get a quote or package deal for the event.
Just because Fort JadhavGADH is situated outside of Pune doesn't mean there won't be much to do. In fact, it might end up that you might not have enough days in your vacation to fully experience the place. The foremost attraction, aside from the fort's very own heritage status, is the Aai Museum. The former stables of the fortress have been converted into a museum and gallery with exhibits of weapons, artifacts, and everyday items from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The fort also holds a variety of cultural activities worth checking, especially after visiting the museum. Mawalas are small figurines of Marathi soldiers that you can paint and take home as a souvenir. Another way to express your artistic side is joining a pottery lesson taught by a local master artisan. You can also adorn your hands with intricate henna designs, done by professional Mehandi artists.
Since you won't always be out and about, you can relax at the on-site spa with a massage or treatment . You can also spend a slow day, admiring the local entertainment held at the fort. The hotel hosts Lavani folk dancers and their lively, colorful performances. Mardani khel, the traditional Marathi martial arts, is also performed as evening entertainment, showcasing the same skills and techniques that Pilaji Jadhavrao and warriors practiced. If you'd also like to get active, you can invite friends to try body zorbing, or hone your skills in rifle shooting or archery. You can even fish in the pond, and have the restaurant's chef turn your catch into a tasty meal.
There are plenty more to experience outside of the fort's estate. Take a cart ride to explore the nearby villages, or to admire the scenery. The nearby hills and mountains are perfect for hiking trips, especially if you're looking to admire the sunrise or sunset atop one of the peaks. Depending on the trail, you can visit ruins such as Malhargad Fort, or one of the nearby camp sites or lakes.
Aside from weddings, Fort JadhavGADH also welcomes private and corporate events. Their venues can also be tailored for seminars, conferences, or company retreats. If you're instead looking to celebrate an intimate birthday or anniversary, you can book a private table at one of the restaurants, and put in a request for personalized service.
