The site where Cedar Inn stands was originally occupied by a bungalow built sometime during the 19th century. At that time, the British East India Company was still expanding its influence into other parts of India, including the Himalayan Mountains. The cool climate and beautiful valleys inspired the Brits to acquire this region, which they then turned into a resort for recuperation.

Around the same time, Dr. Archibald Campbell was able to purchase tea seeds from China and wanted to study whether they could somehow grow tea in India. His experiments were a success, and Darjeeling soon grew into one of the biggest tea producers. Although conjecture, we could surmise that the 19th-century bungalow that once stood on these grounds was used by Brits in India either for relaxation and convalescence, or as a residence for tea farmers.
