Built in 1926, during the Colonial Era, the building that would become the Calcutta Bungalow began as a family compound. Its architecture was distinctly Indian, differentiating it from the Art Deco popular during that time.
By the time its current owner, Iftekhar Ahsan, found and bought the property, the building was in dire need of restoration work. Much of that work was led by Swarup Dutta, a multi-disciplinary artist and designer, who not only restored the building but also improved and transformed it with elegant and stylish touches. The Calcutta Bungalow you would see now is an icon of Kolkata's glorious past and bustling present, ready to welcome guests with heartfelt Indian hospitality.
Despite its humble and homey ambiance, the Calcutta Bungalow stands out in the streets of Kolkata for its design. Although built in 1926 , it follows a traditional Indian style instead of the Art Deco themes popular during that decade.
The hosts opted to keep their dignified old-world air by encouraging a vintage look, especially for their terrace and courtyards. The soft and subdued color schemes make the Bungalow look like it is aging gracefully and naturally as the years pass. Interiors also lean toward minimalism , creating a comfortable sense of space as well as giving the lodgings an upper-middle-class household vibe.
While Calcutta Bungalow does not have an actual restaurant, it's a bed & breakfast style heritage stay, so guests should not miss out on the delicious meals offered. Their breakfasts come in continental and a la carte options, paired with fresh local fruits. They also host themed dinners during special days, which bring out amazing delicacies saved for those occasions.
Cultural Experiences
Calcutta Bungalow lets you experience life in Kolkata as a local by integrating daily aspects of Indian culture into your stay. Guests can mingle and eat with locals, playing games and sports, or chatting in the evening. The hosts of the B&B are also eager to give recommendations, whether it's shopping for handicrafts or where to find the tastiest street food. They're also partners with Calcutta Walks, a sustainable tourism program promoting Kolkata through organic and personalized experiences.
That said, no cultural experience is complete if you miss out on religious festivals. The Bengali people celebrate several big ones each year, particularly Durga Puja and Doljatra, so be sure to join in.
