History

BrijRama Hotel dates back to 1812, when it was built to be the residence of Shridhara Narayana Munshi, financial minister of Nagpur during the early 19th century. Another century later, in 1915, King Rameshwar Singh Bahadur of Darbhanga acquired the residence and made his own improvements. These include the addition of a new level and the installation of one of India's and Asia's first modern elevators.

Nearly another century later, it was extensively renovated and restored by 1589 Hotels, opening it in 2016 as a luxury boutique stay.

Design and Architecture

Having existed for over 200 years, BrijRama Palace features a mix of architectural styles that reflects the personalities of its past owners, as well as the eras they lived in. The edifice features striking Maratha architecture and made of the region's sandstone, loved for its reddish-pink hues.

When it was first acquired by its current owners, 1589 Hotels, the palace underwent extensive renovation and restoration work. They added regional elements such as thekari artworks, intricate painted patterns, and murals. They've also restored the motifs and embellishments added by King Rameshwar, including the floral filigrees, Greco-Roman figures, and carvings depicting animals in the Ganges such as river dolphins. To accentuate the lavish heritage ambiance, they also added period antiques from the 18th century.
