The history of Alsisar Haveli began in 1892, when it was founded by the Thakur of Alsisar, the local lord, to serve as another residence while staying in Jaipur. The Thakur was part of the renowned Shekhawat clan, whose name would be used to refer to the broader Shekhawati Region, with the clan boasting many palatial properties such as the haveli. The property would remain intact and undamaged in the succeeding years, even after the eventful years of both World Wars, the transition of India towards becoming a republic, and the loss of ruling status for the Thakur and his fellow ruling nobles.
In the late 20th and early 21st century, other branches of the broader clan with similar lavish properties were incentivized to begin converting their residences into public accommodations. The Thakurs’ inheritors followed the trend by refurbishing and converting Alsisar Haveli into a heritage hotel, a process which was completed in 1994, with the property now offering its 45 beautiful rooms and regal hospitality for both local guests and those from all over the world.
Design and Architecture
Having been built in 1892, Alsisar Haveli features an eclectic blend of various architectural styles and aesthetics. Its construction during the height of British rule in India has resulted in the inclusion of certain Western architectural influences, such as the use of decorative Corinthian pillars adorning passageways and entrances. Fountains, fixtures, and even furniture also exemplify Western influences throughout the property.
More dominant, however, are the Indo-Saracenic aesthetics that were prevalent during the late 19th century, which were usually mixed with other Rajasthani design elements. These can be seen in the increased use of concrete elements, such as in the decorative domes and towers dotting the rooftop. Overhanging eaves, elaborately arched passageways, and recessed entrances were also elements of this mixture of Indian styles.
The interior of Alsisar Haveli serves as a more lavish example of the rich blend of these various styles and designs. Halls and rooms are decorated in intricate and ostentatious filigree and linework, featuring rich tapestries, paintings, and sculptures. These are painstakingly hand-painted, depicting elaborate floral and geometric patterns strongly influenced by Indo-Saracenic designs. Sculptures, paintings, and certain interior designs are more reminiscent of modern Western aesthetics, with the last being most apparent in bathrooms, where minimalist features blend naturally with the modern fixtures.
