Warren Road, KT2 7HY Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom
Though it isn't as old as the castles and manors of Medieval England, Warren House still has a distinct personality that makes it stand out among the many heritage stays in London. The mansion was constructed in 1865 as a grand Victorian country residence for the London banker Hugh Hammersley. He had acquired the land from Prince George, the Duke of Cambridge. On it, he envisioned a resplendent home that embodied the ideals of Victorian England. The architect James Pearse St. Aubyn turned that vision into a reality, raising an edifice in striking Gothic Revival style which was completed in 1870. Complementing the mansion were expansive landscaped grounds, including a Japanese water garden that Hammersley himself developed adjacent to the main estate. Following his death in 1880, the property changed hands several times before being acquired in 1907 by aristocrats General Sir Arthur Paget and Lady Mary Paget. The couple then transformed the home into a center of Edwardian high society, hosting elaborate gatherings for elite guests, including King Edward VII himself.
After Lady Paget’s era, the house took on various new owners, particularly from 1954 when it was acquired by Imperial Chemical Industries and repurposed as a training and conference center. Parts of the estate were sold off over the next few decades, though in the early 2000s, the mansion and remaining land were redeveloped with the explicit aim of turning it into a luxury hospitality destination. More recently in 2020, the property was acquired by Sun Hotels, under whose management it has continued to operate as a celebrated historic stay in England.
As a Victorian manor built in 1865, Warren House features architecture that embodies the elegance and opulence of the Victorian Era. The building’s exterior showcases classic Victorian conventions, placing emphasis on symmetry and artistic details that have been preserved through careful restorations. The mansion is protected by Historic England as a Grade II listed structure, with notable features such as high ceilings, ornate period fireplaces, and decorative moldings.
The landscaped gardens are an integral part of the estate’s design, boasting winding paths, ornamental ponds, fountains, and a sunken terrace. Many classic elements remain intact, such as the Victorian stone benches, a grotto, and an ornate Italian loggia, all rooted in 19th-century landscape aesthetics.
The hotel’s interiors blend heritage and contemporary comfort, particularly when it comes to its guest rooms and public spaces. Some bedrooms retain their original decorative elements, including the period fireplaces and traditional embellishments, especially in the more historical Feature Rooms. Suites like the King Edward Suite, which was originally built for a royal guest, retain their original grandeur while providing modern comforts and furnishings. In the same vein, accessibility is also considered, and guests with special needs and limits will find well-equipped accessible rooms that include a wet room and a lowered bed and desk.
