History

Long before it became a place to stay the night, The Old Ferry Boat was part of everyday life along the River Great Ouse. Dating back to 560 AD, the thatched inn is widely thought to be the oldest in England, built to serve travelers waiting to cross the river at Holywell, near St Ives. Over the centuries, it has watched the river traffic come and go, from early traders to modern-day travelers. The building is now protected for its historic and architectural importance, and although it has been refurbished many times, its character remains intact. Now, it stands much as it always has, adapted for modern life without losing its sense of history.

Design and Architecture

The Old Ferry Boat follows the style of a traditional English thatched inn that has been shaped slowly over time. Its low profile, whitewashed walls, and layered thatch give it a slightly uneven, lived-in look that suits its quiet rural setting. The building is a mix of two-storey and single-storey sections with attic space, along with an earlier cross wing that hints at its medieval beginnings. Rough-cast walls, simple brickwork, and weatherboarded details add to its practical, time-worn feel.

Inside, the age of the building is easy to notice. Exposed ceiling beams run through many of the rooms. A large inglenook hearth with a baking oven still sits in the cross wing, and an enclosed staircase is tucked into the layout. These older features sit comfortably alongside modern updates. The inn has seven en suite rooms with bright and classic decor, large beds, with a few rooms set aside for guests traveling with dogs.
