The Crown Inn is renowned as one of England’s most historic coaching inns, with records dating back to the 14th century. Located in the village of Chiddingfold in Surrey, it served as a rest stop for pilgrims travelling between Salisbury and Canterbury. One very notable item the inn has on display is the original deed from 1383, giving weight and credence to its long and colorful history. It's also part of the local lore, with stories tied to tunnels built by Cistercian monks and visits by historic figures, such as King Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I.
In modern times, The Crown Inn has been lovingly restored and remains a part of Chiddingfold's community. In 2008, Daniel and Hannah Hall purchased the property and undertook an extensive renovation to revive its historic charm while upgrading it with contemporary features. Its gorgeous public spaces boast oak‑panelled rooms, roaring fireplaces, and centuries‑old fixtures and decor. All these are paired with quality hospitality based on modern standards that are sure to meet the demands of today's discerning travelers.
For its dedication, The Crown Inn was awarded The AA's 5-Star rating, putting it at the pinnacle of Britain's finest establishments.
The Crown Inn is a notably well-preserved example of medieval Wealden architecture, with origins in the 14th century and elements believed to be from the early 1400s. Structurally, the building features traditional oak timber framing reinforced with clay, which is a hallmark construction style of that period. Renovations during the 1950s also removed tiles added during the 17th century, revealing The Crown's authentic period exterior.
The inn’s layout comprises a central hall with cross wings, a product of its original design as a large hall house. Expansions and restorations that took place over the centuries enhanced the inn's character and beauty, and remain intact to this day. One example is the inglenook fireplace believed to have been inserted above the original hearth sometime in the 1500s. Also noted is the distinct crown post roof that remains largely intact.
